7-week-old Barcelona OntheGo Food Truck brings major OC competition with it's thoroughly impressive high quality ingredients – some even imported from Spain. The Grubdown: - oozy & fluffy warm Manchego Cheese Croquettes with Balsamic Reduction Syrup Drizzle - tender, chunky Chicken Empanadas with Red Peppers & Caramelized Onions - big-enough-for-two, classic with a bit of crunch Chicken & Seafood Paella Valencia - imported creamy Anko Piquillo Pepper Mousse & Bomba Arroz
This Food Truck Friday I'm introducing a whole new kind of Gourmet Food Truck, that while a little on the expensive side, is totally worth every bite. My hand model Evan and I were blown away by the high standards and quality Spanish cuisine owner Esteban Nocito not only served us, but also walked us through the best order to enjoy his food. After showing us the truck's nifty pull-down tray table for us to eat our food on, Esteban recommended we start with the Manchego Cheese Croquettes ($5) so that the spicy red pepper flavor of the Chicken Empanadas didn't overpower its creaminess. Quite possibly the best I've ever had, these fluffy mashed potato-like croquettes were so delicate and lightly fried, they practically melted in my mouth – and the Manchego Cheese oozed with every bite. They also sat on a drizzle of Balsamic Reduction Syrup, which gave them a hint of sweetness. The Chicken Empanadas ($5) were really juicy and had tender chunks of spicy Chicken and long, thin strips of Roasted Red Peppers and Caramelized Onions inside. But the soft, flaky pastry made these empanadas stellar, as most I've had are always too hard and dry. I was really happy to see that both the Croquettes & Empanadas came with a small, healthy Mixed Green Salad with Honey Balsamic Vinaigrette – definitely not something most food trucks do. Finally, we ended with the classic Chicken & Seafood Paella Valencia ($9). The imported Bomba rice was tender with a little bit of crunch, and came with a mixture of beautiful green Mussels, Calamari, Shrimp, Peas, and Chicken. The imported creamy Anko Piquillo Pepper Mousse it was topped with was so delicious, I wish there was more for dipping. Our total, plus a bottle of Coke, came to $23. Both the Croquettes & Empanadas were larger than expected, and we ended up taking half the Paella home because it was so big – so, considering the quality ingredients and portion size, it was definitely worth every penny. Hardly wanting to call it a "Truck" after experience such an amazing meal, the @BrcelonaOntheGo "Gourmet-On-Wheels" is only roaming around OC for now – LA Biters, be jealous. You can find them for lunch today from 11:30am-2pm at 19762 MacArthur Blvd, Irvine on the corner of Jamboree. And tonight from 4:30-9pm at Hi-Time Wine Cellars 250 Ogle St, Costa Mesa. Ooh, how I'm tempted to go back for more – good thing I got leftovers!
