After spending a week indulging in donuts, breakfast burritos, and Spanish tapas, I thought it was high time I mix in a salad – and boy was I glad I did. I first met Mixt Greens on a trip to San Francisco where I spent a weekend with my fabulous friend Michael. Naturally he recommended his favorite, bustling, healthy salad spot in the Financial District on Commercial St. – Mixt Greens. Michael ordered his favorite Madison Salad ($10.95) with Grilled Chicken, Asparagus, Pine Nuts and, as he calls them, "little gems of Roasted White-Truffle Potatoes." I ordered the Dagwood Salad ($8.45) – a vegetarian paradise – and it was love at first bite. So, when I found out Mixt Greens opened a new location in LA on the Miracle Mile late last February, I had to reignite the flame. Packed with big, earthy, organic roasted veggies like Red Peppers, Portabellas, and Zucchini then balanced with creamy Goat Cheese and sweet Caramelized Onions, the Dagwood Salad truly nurtures your appetite and your body – and I'm not even a vegetarian. In staying with this week's healthy routine, I decided to forgo the Garlic Croutons & Lemon Herb Vinaigrette and stick to straight Balsamic Vinegar & Olive Oil (although I did sneak a bite of the wholesome Wheat Sourdough Bread it came with.) Mixt Greens lets you make 1 staple (like veggies, seeds & beans) or 1 specialty (like Applewood Smoked Bacon, Soba Noodles & Sharp Cheddar) substitution. You can also design your own salad for $6.95 from over 50 different toppings, 5 different kinds of greens, and 14 house made dressings – extras like Toasted Pumpkin &
Coriander-Crusted Seared Ahi Tuna range from .50¢–$5. You can also count your calories before you go with their Online Nutrition Calculator. Along with the Dagwood, my trusty hand model & I split the Bistro Sandwich ($8.95) – thinly sliced Roasted Carved Sirloin, sweet Marinated Grilled Red Onions, impressively thick & tasty slices of Pecorino cheese, spicy Baby Arugula, and creamy Black Truffle Aioli on a fresh baked Torpedo Roll. Ok, ok, I should've substituted the white roll for the healthy Wheat Sourdough, but the refined Bistro Sandwich is delicious just the way it is. At least I steered clear of ordering one of their tantalizing, fresh-baked All Natural Cookies ($1.50) and Mini Organic Green & Blacks Chocolate Bars ($1.95). Not saying these are bad for you, but hey I had to stop somewhere! I was a bit disappointed that the Miracle Mile location did not serve the fabulous, spa-like complimentary Cucumber Lemon Lime Filtered water like the SF location did. But, I was happy to see they sold Kombucha ($4.95), Izze All Natural Sodas ($2), and Purity Organic Juices ($2.50). So this Earth Day, do yourself and the planet a favor by lunching at Mixt Greens, where the fare is organic, hormone-free, local & seasonal, their take away containers are made from 100% compostable corn, and their shop is built from renewable, recycled & environmentally friendly materials. Check out their Twitter page, @mixtgreeens, for special Earth Day only giveaways. P.S. On your way out, make sure you throw your trash away in the appropriate receptacle – Recyclable (bottles, cans & plastic), Compostable (food, paper, cups, all packaging & utensils), or Non-Compostable.
