To warm my soul from Wednesday's cold rainy day, I decided to revisit the Dim Sum Truck. My first Grubdown was on their dumplings at the LA Street Food Fest, so this time I tried some new items of course.
The Grubdown:
- sticky, dry, needs more sauce 'n meat Steamed BBQ Pork Buns (2 for $3.25)
- earthy, tangy 'n sticky in a good way Lotus Leaf-wrapped Sticky Rice with Chicken, Pork, Sausage, Shrimp & Mushroom ($3.25)
Happy Food Truck Friday biters. I'm gonna start this one off by gettin' real. I was not impressed by Dim Sum's Steamed BBQ Pork Buns – nor was my dehydrated tongue. While the meat inside was tasty with great Sweet BBQ flavor, there was not enough and it had too much fluff.
As for the Sticky Rice, don't even think about eating the Lotus Leaf – that's strictly for presentation purposes. But once you unravel it or poke around inside, the rice is gooey with a smokey, sweet, savory sauce. The Mushrooms are meaty, the Sausage is sweet, but the promised Shrimp & Chicken were nowhere in sight. (Perhaps they were trying to stay dry by keeping cover in the truck.)
I hope next time I return, the Dim Sum will get a little more saucey with me.
Tomorrow they'll be downtown at FIDM on 9th and Hope. Follow them on Twitter @dimsumtruck.
