Unassuming Pinches Tacos in Culver City packs some serious spice. Located on Washington Blvd just east of the Helms Bakery District, this pink & blue gem thankfully offers an adjacent parking lot. Walk inside and everything from the walls to soda bottles are adorned with Mexican flair like pinatas, Dia de los Muertos skulls & paintings, and sombreros.
Soon, the Anaya family owners – who got their start behind the scenes at LA's esteemed The Ivy, only to later open Cha Cha Cha – will have their own reality TV show (check out Pinches Tacos Pilot). So before the seats fill up, and the parking lot is packed, enjoy their honest company and homemade cuisine.
The Grubdown:
- the waiter was definitely right, cuz this perfectly slow broiled & marinated meat stole my heart, Al Pastor Taco $2.25
- the fish was flaky, but a creamy white sauce would've done better than sweet salsa, Pescado Taco with Veracruz Cole Slaw $2.70
- sweet, spicy 'n chunky thick sauce, tender stewed meat Chicken Enchiladas with Salsa Roja, Beans & Rice $9.95
- i needed more cripsy 'n greasy home fried Tortilla Chips to calm the secret spicy ingredient, creamy 'n chunky Guacamole with Serrano Chili $??
If I could do it all over it again – and the hand model & I will indeed – I'd take the waiter's recommendation and swap the Pescado Taco for the Shrimp. The sweet Tomato Salsa overwhelms the light 'n flaky white fish. Instead, it should be served with simple Lime or a light White Sauce.
