If you're just as obsessed with Bravo TV as I am, then you already know all about Fonuts Bakery in LA as featured in the new hit series "Eat Drink Love". Airing Thursday nights, the show follows five talents in the food industry – a restaurant marketing director, a publicist, a food critic, a private chef, and Waylynn Lucas, pastry chef & co-owner of Fonuts.
What makes them "faux" is that the dough is never fried, but rather baked or steamed for a healthier choice.
I visited a few weekends past to taste what the talk was all about. That Saturday afternoon, there were no TV cameras or said co-owner to be seen, and the flavors I'd been pining over (Blueberry Earl Grey and Salted Caramel) were gone too. I still had my choice of Vegan and Gluten-Free, along with regular cake donut varieties.
So what does a fonut taste like? A moist, buttery cupcake with icing and a hole.
The Grubdown:
- real Strawberry Seed crunch, great mixture of tart 'n sweet, Strawberry Buttermilk Fonut $3.50
- i wanted to love this, but felt it needed real Coconut Flakes to boost the too subtle Coconut flavor, Chocolate Coconut Vegan & Gluten Free Fonut $3.50
- dreamy decadent indulgence, Peanut Butter Chocolate Fonut $3.50
Bite Advice: Go early if you want your flavor because the goods go fast. At least the bakery has long hours, such as 7:30am to 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays, PLUS they're open on Sundays!
All in all, fonuts were a unique treat, and it was hard to tell the Vegan from the regular cake (major kudos for that). However, their cupcake resemblance left me longing for mile-high frosting.
