School's out for Summer, so it's time to hit up Sunny Spot for Bottomless Brunch. Located in the previous Beechwood bar off Washington Blvd. in Venice, genius Roy Choi (creator of LA's famous Kogi BBQ Truck) moved in with a menu featuring Caribbean and Pacific flavors – or as he calls it "West Coast Indies".
Make sure to reserve a table well in advance 'cuz this place gets poppin' with hour long lines out the door. The crowd is as lively as the color scheme, featuring vibrant turquoises, pinks, yellows, and patterns you'd find at a Caribbean street fair. And the music is so loud, you won't be able to hear yourself drink.
Thankfully, the staff is on par, always with a sunny disposition when refilling drinks amongst the beckoning crowd.
The food features tropical Jerk sauces and spices, and of course a bottomless Rum Punch.
The Grubdown:
- tender meat with a kickin' sweet Tomato Jam, spicy slaw, bun was dry, Two-Fisted Cheeseburger with Tomato Jam, Red Onion, Arugula, Cheddar, Herb Mayo, a must-add Fried Egg ($1) atop a Brioche Bun with Yucca Fries $13
- pork belly is different with a hint of tropical sweetness, potatoes exude coconut & cinnamon spice, Egg Plate with 2 Eggs Any Style, Jerk Potatoes & Braised Pork Belly OR Grilled Skirt Steak $15
- shrimps are tiny and wish there were moe, dirt cajun spice with perfectly creamy grits, Diablo Shrimp and Grits with Spicy Rum Sauce, Garlic Butter, Herb & 2 Fried Eggs over Grits $12
- smokey with greasy drippings, Applewood Smoked Bacon Side $5
Overall, the food was good, not great. Perhaps I was expecting more. But really nothing could ever live up to that virgin bite of Kogi BBQ.
