Last weekend the hand model and I took the Balboa Island Ferry to Newport Beach Peninsula. We wanted to try something new, so we stumbled upon Patty Macs, just one block from the dock right off East Bay and Palm.
Walking inside we were warmly greeted by reggae music, a friendly waitress, and guy-next-door host. They allowed us time to peruse the menu with no pressure – very fitting as the restaurant is island style with Jamaican influenced food. After reading about Grilled Halibut & Papaya Cole Slaw Sandwiches, Truffle Flat Breads, 10+ enticing gourmet Mac N Cheeses, and Hand Crafted Lemonades, we were sold.
The Grubdown:
- glisteningly juicy, sweet 'n spicy, pillowy bun with crisp edge, Pan Seared 8 oz Cheeseburger with Caramelized Red Onions, Tillamook Cheddar, Arugula & Roasted Garlic Aioli on a Brioche Bun $12.95
- left something to be desired, like seasoning or aioli dipping sauce, Sweet Potato Fries
- this baby's got plenty of kick, sweet nutmeg & clove meets hot pepper spice, Jerk Chicken Mac with Marinated Chicken in Jamaican Jerk Sauce & Three Cheese Blend $10.95
- herbal, cool 'n fresh, Cool Cucumber Handcrafted Lemonade $5
The hand model and I were blown away by how much flavor was packed in Patty Mac's humble spot. Especially with their burger. It rivals the famous Father's Office in LA any day. And the cheesy sauce blend in the Jerk Chicken Mac was so smooth 'n creamy, I'm ready to go back for more, just one week later.
The staff couldn't have been more hospitable, too. They really make you feel right at home, and if you're lucky, will shake up a custom Soju drink to resemble your favorite cocktail.
In closing, if there's only two things you need to remember, it's: Get the Patty. Get the Mac.
