For over 25 years, Sweet Lady Jane has been baking with the freshest Butters & Creams, in-season Fruits, and finest Imported Chocolates. Founder, Jane Lockhart, came up with the concept – and subsequent ironic name – because she felt that store-brought desserts seemed just "too sweet".
I used to frequent their flagship location in West Hollywood when I lived in LA. I fell in love with their signature Triple Berry Shortcake made with Fresh Berries and Butter-cream Frosting – not the fake sugary sweet stuff. I'd order them often for my hand model's birthdays, or 'just because'. And, whenever the holidays came around, their Pumpkin Cheesecake was at the top of my shopping list.
Needless to say, when I found out this January that Sweet Lady Jane was coming to Orange County's Corona del Mar, I was elated. I just wish it didn't take 'til last weekend to finally open its doors.
Tomorrow, Lunch Menu service will begin with options such as Curried Chicken Salad Sandwiches and Turkey Meatloaf.
Friday, September 18th marks their Grand Opening.
For now, here's what to order for Dessert.
The Grubdown:
- tart, fluffy, rich 'n creamy, Triple Berry Shortcake with Fresh Strawberries, Raspberries & Blueberries and Butter-Cream Frosting $7.50 per slice
- tastes like grandma made it, buttery, flaky, juicy, Peach Pie with Fresh Whole Peaches and light Sugar Crystal dust $7.50 per slice
- crisp chocolate 'n spice, Chocolate Cinnamon Rugelach $1.25
- gooey citrus delight, Lemon Bar $2
I guess when you think about it, it's actually a good thing Sweet Lady Jane decided to open right at the end of Bikini Season, and the beginning of Holiday Eating.
Bon Appetit!
