There's another new spot on Balboa Island (read about The Royal Hen), bringing polish & finesse to this once quaint & charming, touristy destination.
Mr. G's Bistro serves California & Italian-inspired cuisine from Handmade Pastas to Burrata Prosciutto boards with edible Flowers & Mint.
The decor is simple: classic black & white linen table cloths with champagne mirrors and sculptural round bulb lights.
The service is friendly, accommodating, and full of personality.
The food is fresh, but for some dishes, overdressed.
The Grubdown:
- clean, light, refreshing, Burrata with Tangerine, Proscuitto, Mint, Edible Flowers, Honey & Petite Baguette $14
- tender, juicy with crispy crunch, a bit salty, Fried Chicken with Arugula Salad, Lemon & Sea Salt $16 (Lunch Only)
- melts in your mouth, very rich, Tagliatelle with Lump Crab, Sea Urchin, Calabrian Chili, Lemon & Pecorino $28
Overall, I was very impressed with Mr. G's Bistro's refinement and attention to detail. Our two main courses leaned on the salty side, but were mouthwatering to say the least, and we kept coming back for more.
There was no room for dessert – they ran out of the Chocolate Budino, anyhow.
Mr. G's Bistro offers Beer, Wine, and Champagne only, however they have a great "Balboa Hour" (a.k.a. Happy Hour) with half off drinks from 3pm to 6pm Tuesday thru Sunday.
