Last week I had a much needed "GNO", a.k.a. Girls Night Out, in L.A. My friend told me about a new Wine Bar – and sister restaurant to co-owner Matthew Kaner's Bar Covell – offering tasty small plates and Paleo diet friendly entrees that had just opened up in Atwater Village.
From the outside, Good Measure doesn't stand out as a restaurant, aside from the back patio tucked down the neighborhood street. The reveal takes place when you step up to the host area, then walk behind the velvet emerald green curtain – and no, The Wizard of Oz is not on the other side. Instead, lies olive green & white tiled flooring, as well as walnut brown wood tables. To the back is a regular bar, while to the right is the wine tasting bar, featuring guest sommeliers and classes with food & wine pairings.
My girlfriends and I ordered the complete spectrum of Red Wines: 1.) The Chateau de Breze "Clos du Mazerique" Cabernet Franc – mellow & fruity 2.) The Negrette (off-menu) – dry & spicy, and 3.) The AM/FM Cabernet (off-menu) – full bodied & leathery.
We sat in the regular dining table area and were promptly greeted by a friendly waiter. He was attentive and gave great suggestions. Thankfully, my girls agreed to share everything, despite our differing dietary restrictions. But, the good news is Good Measure's menu makes it easy for anyone looking for some Paleo, gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan, etc. options.
The Grubdown:
- exactly how it's named, slightly tough crunch, Crispy Pork Rillete with Rhubarb Mostardo & Market Greens $9
- a vegan or anyone-for-that-matter's dream, nutty with the right acidity, Roasted Baby Carrots & Sunchokes with Carrot Top Salsa Verde & Pistachios $9
- smoky 'n fresh, Mussels with Bacon, Tomato, Shallot, Fresno Chile, Garlic, Fennel, Preserved Lemon & Grilled Bread $14
- a paleo's delight, some bites were dry but it was a well-composed dish, California Halibut with Grilled Rhubarb, Fennel Confit & Potato Rosti $26
Good Measure has Great Food. The dishes are well thought out and composed with fresh, seasonal, clean ingredients.
It doesn't surprise me that their Chef is from my former favorite L.A. spots like Grace and BLD.
Bon Appetit!
