The Suite Life had been trying to get Your Next Bite to The Corner in Huntington Beach for quite some time. After months of texting & failed attempts, our schedules finally aligned and we made it for a Friday night out. (I don't think you understand....)

The Corner is a casual spot located, none other than on 'the corner', of a strip mall across from the unassuming Adams Ave. Donuts, where Ashlee Simpson once filmed her music video "La La". (The Suite Life made me tell you.) The disguised-as-a-divebar place used to be a Chinese restaurant. You can find hidden clues throughout, like its original ceiling and Koi fish mural overhead at the bar. As far as the walls, they are barren – and for good reason – because at The Corner, the art is on your plate, instead of the walls.

The food is modern American, farm-to-table comfort cuisine, brought to you by owner/chef Chris Grodach, formerly of The Loft at The Montage. (One day we'll make it there, The Suite Life. How does March 2020 sound?) There's something for everyone to enjoy from Rose Cocktails to Gluten Free Little Gem Lettuces with Snow Crab, Kid's Menu Cheeseburgers, Lobster Bolognese Pappardelle, and 48-hour Fries. Did I mention there's a whole secret menu, too? (Thanks for sharing, The Suite Life!)

I would honestly order everything again. And, the item I felt most skeptical about, having heard about it months prior – the secret menu Short Rib & Mashed Potato Taco – I secretly liked best. This is California, why not put it in a taco?

The space is no frills, the service is friendly, and even the handful of families hogging the booths at Happy Hour were chill.

If you want to throw a party, there's a private room at the back, currently filled with the entire restaurant's furniture as they undergo a floor renovation.

Don't worry though...the art will still be on your plate.

On The Rocks Bar & Grill opens up on PCH in Newport Beach

The other day I was driving down PCH and noticed yet another new restaurant in the former Margaritaville spot in Newport Beach. I say former Margaritaville spot because I don't think anyone ever went to the hot pink sports bar that took over and only lasted for about a year. 

Now, this new addition on Mariner's Mile has finally got it right, thanks to the family friendly On The Rocks Bar & Grill chain from Garden Grove. Kids menu? Check. Kids movies? Check. And get this, they have a whole separate "Kids Movie Room" complete with sports & animal-themed bean bag chairs.

Now on to the adults. For Breakfast they have a Build Your Own Blood Mary Bar. Their Weekly Specials include Mason Jar Mondays with Well Drinks for $6, Taco Tuesdays for $2.50, Wine Wednesdays with 25% off all Wines, and Thirsty Thursdays with $7 Drinks and $5 Shots. And, Friday and Saturday nights live bands come perform on stage.

The interior is country style with dark brown wooden tables and leather booths.

The menu is typical bar food, but they mix it up with appetizers such as Steamed Clams and healthier options like Garden Burgers and Baby Kale & Grain Salads. And if you're throwing a party, they do catering, too.

The hand model and I just had a few bites to eat, but definitely want to return for the Steamed Clams and Signature Gluten Sensitive Rocks Dip.

The service couldn't be more genuine. Even though I had to return my Baby Kale Salad because it was wilted, the manager personally came out, admitted how embarrassed he was by it, and made it right.

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo & Cinco de Drinko at Puesto

If you've ever wanted to go to Mexico City to take in the food, art, and culture, a trip to Puesto might be the fastest solution.

Chef Luisteen prides himself on being a "Tacoteur", crafting 10+ handmade stoneground blue corn tacos ranging from Filet Mignon, Tamarindo Shrimp, and Chicken Al Pastor to Vegetarian Zucchini & Cactus and the Taco of the Month. Each Taco truly represents a work of art all the way down to the teensy garnish details.

Speaking of art, Puesto is vibrant and colorful just like Mexico City with pops of neon pink, yellow, orange, and blues juxtaposed by steel and wood fixtures and lush natural greenery.

Their "Bar Program" serves up Fresh Margaritas, 20+ Tequilas, housemade Aguas Frescas, and Wines from the Valle de Guadalupe region of Baja. If you love Mezcal like me, El Mezcalito is the way to go, or try something new from their 20+ "Mezcal and Fun Agave Spirits" Menu.

The waitstaff are friendly, very accommodating, and offer up some great suggestions.

This Cinco de Mayo, luckily you can still make a reservation, at one of Puesto's family owned San Diego or Orange County spots - Santa Clara and Concord to come!

Historical yet Hipster vibes at Panama 66 in Balboa Park, San Diego

Over Labor Day weekend, my family and I visited Balboa Park in San Diego for the first time. We were looking for a quick place to grab a bite before heading to the San Diego Zoo, so a friend recommended Panama 66. ­(We enjoyed the outdoor atmosphere and live band so much that we ended up staying.)

The outdoor restaurant is adjacent to the San Diego Museum of Art. It overlooks one of Balboa Park’s most famous sights, the historical California Tower, blending Spanish-Colonial, Gothic, Baroque, and many more types of architecture. At night, the tower is lit up with different colors, while hipsters 'n families gather 'round the grassy park, listening to the live band playing next door at Panama 66.

The restaurant is café style. You place an order for your food and drink, then grab a number while you patiently wait at your table to be served.

To pass the time, there’s plenty good to drink, like local San Diego Craft Beers, California Wines, and seriously amazing Craft Cocktails – from old classics like The Hemingway to new ones, such as the Friendship Garden.

And, the food is definitely something to salivate over with three types of House-Cut Fries and six types of Sandwiches, ranging from vegetarian to Wagyu Beef. All the ingredients are local, and the menu changes frequently.

The Brigantine – One of the Best Happy Hours in Coronado, San Diego

If you're looking for some last minute plans to celebrate Happy Hour this Labor Day – most likely accompanied by the entire 405 freeway that was headed southbound to San Diego this past Saturday – then check out The Brigantine Seafood & Oyster Bar in Coronado Island.

My family and I used to frequent The Brigantine a lot when I was little. I remember it was always packed, especially on the patio, and it had an old-school nautical ship vibe. Recently, The Brigantine underwent a forced remodel by the city. Our waiter told us how locals and frequenters of the restaurant were so sad to lose a piece of history that many took of 'a piece of The Brig' home, from decorative items to entire booths!

The new remodel is a modern sea venture with cool blues, beiges, and driftwoods, and a few nautical elements like ship wheels and gold metal fish hung on the wall.

The food is still just as good, with one of the best and most filling Happy Hours around! (The hand model and I ordered 3 Happy Hour items and just one Dinner Entree.)

This past weekend, the hand model & I finally made it out to Ballast Point in Alamitos Bay. It's one of his favorite Craft Beers, offering quite a range of hoppy IPAs to newer light 'n fruity Wheat Ales and toasty Stouts.

Ballast Point started out as a small group of home brewers. Today, they have an impressive roster of over 85 Beers and 6 breweries – their newest being at Alamitos Bay and it is on point, literally.

It's a modern, vast space at the end of the bay, literally in the shape of a point. Walk inside and you're greeted by the main square bar and dining room with expansive views of the bay and Pacific Ocean. Along the window, there is a more intimate lounge seating area. To the left is a smaller bar and outside patio, complete with a game of corn-hole. Up top is a third bar with more lounge seating in front of floor to "ceiling" windows.

The whole place offers plenty of different sections great for parties. The crowd is upbeat and lively. And, the menu has plenty to snack on or make a meal out of.

Taste the Best Crab Legs & a bit of History at Captain Jack's in Sunset Beach

This past weekend, the hand model and I celebrated our 11th anniversary. While we couldn't make our annual trip, we did get to feel whisked away on vacay, thanks to Captain Jack's.

Located off PCH in Sunset Beach, Captain Jack's has a glimpse of Huntington Harbor and a dock to pull up from your boat.

It also offers a bit of history – much appreciated in this age of constant development – having been open since 1965.

Owner, Jack Haley, grew up in Seal Beach, attended Huntington Beach High School & Cal State Long Beach, and was inducted into the Surfers' Hall of Fame. He was a prominent figure in the community and so decided to get into the restaurant business, by opening up a nautical-themed restaurant, Captain Jack's.

Since 1965, they've been dishing up family-friendly service, as well as the famed Prime Rib and Alaskan Red King Crab Legs.

The Grubdown:

- so tender 'n full of flavor, we didn't need to dip it, Boiled Artichoke with Pepper, Oregano, Italian Spices, Melted Butter, and Mayonnaise $9.95

The Artichoke was one of the best we've ever had. The Crab Legs were naturally sweet 'n tender, and the entree portion was so big, we had to take some to go.

All the entrees come with a Salad, a side of Rice, and piping hot Sourdough & Pumpernickel Bread.

Since we were sharing, they offered to split each dish at no extra charge.

The service was more than friendly, attentive, and entertaining!

Make sure to come for a birthday or anniversary like we did, and enjoy the bellowing voices of the wait staff when it's time for Dessert.

Speaking of voices, there's also live entertainment every Thursday through Saturday from singer-songwriter, Jim Quealy.

Sittin' Fireside at Jimmy's Famous American Tavern in Dana Point

They say, "April showers bring May flowers." And, since April is almost over, I thought it'd be best to discuss one of my favorite fireside spots, Jimmy's Famous American Tavern in Dana Point.

Jimmy's has a great indoor/outdoor feel with lots of seating options. Step inside and you're greeted by the great bar with a light larger-than-life backlit letters spelling out "Famous" on the side wall. Towards the back, the windows roll up to let the fresh ocean air in table-side. My favorite part is the red cushion lounge right by the open fireplace. You can see through it and catch a glimpse, if you're lucky, of the harbor.

The ambiance is loud 'n lively, and the food is classic, American comfort style.

Celebrate the Holidays and 90 years at A Restaurant in Newport Beach

It's not often you find a restaurant with history in Newport Beach, CA. And this year, A Restaurant, formerly known as The Arches, celebrates 90 years since opening in 1926.

Back then, "The Arches" was a roadside diner with distinct arches as part of its Mediterranean architecture. Over the years, it evolved as a popular place for celebrities to gather for a drink and classic dishes from Steaks & Seafood to French cuisine. Today, A's is known for it's lively bar, great cocktails, and contemporary American menu by Chef Jonathan Blackford.

It's also a place I'm drawn to visit around the holidays because of its festive decorations, warm atmosphere, tufted cherry brown leather booths, and fireplace. 

And, the food is indulgent and rich with everything from Duck Liver Pate to a 55 oz. Tomahawk cut Ribeye.

Each dish has great attention to detail and elegance. The service is spot on and reminded me of a certain bygone era, most likely past down since its opening in the '20s.

Last weekend, I finally got a taste of the "field to fork" cuisine from Farmhouse at Rogers Gardens.

I'd been waiting a year for owner & chef Richard Mead (formerly of Sage) to open his new restaurant.

The concept fits right in the scene, offering everything from garden fresh Kale & Little Gem Lettuce Salads to a rustic hipster farm table setting, straight out of an Anthropologie catalog.

The service is friendly and attentive, but being new, the restaurant still has a lot of kinks to work out – like giving dinner guests the corresponding menu at meal time, and taking care not to spill a drink on passersby.

The food is good. And, the menu is a mish-mash of California meets Italian meets Asian cuisine.

The Grubdown:

- curried cauliflower is the star, while succotash is bland, Farmhouse Vegetable Plate with White Beans & Greens, Curried Cauliflower Cous Cous, Lemon Mint Yogurt, Grilled Corn, Peppers, Red Onions, Squash & Farro, Grilled Peach Chutney $23

Happy Hour at Social in Costa Mesa

I was first drawn to Social in Costa Mesa for the drinks. Upon reading their "bespoke cocktail menu", I couldn't make a decision, so I ordered three, even though they were all different spirits.

The housemade ingredients spoke to me, like Black Tea Syrup and Cinnamon Meringue. I was awe-struck by the mixologists' presentation too, especially the "Gunslinger" served on a plank and filled with smoke.

When I found out their food menu was comprised of classic Southern and new-American inspired dishes, I knew I had to make it a social occasion and go with a group – the more dishes, the merrier!

Social's Happy Hour, a.k.a. the "Social Hour", is every Tuesday through Friday from 5-6pm. Blink and you might miss it. Here's a list of what to order, so you can fire it off to your waitress as soon as you arrive.

North Italia recently opened at the Park Place shopping complex in Irvine. Part of the Fox Restaurant Concepts group (same owners as True Food Kitchen), North Italia breathes new life into Italian food.

The Pasta and Pizza Dough are handmade from scratch, daily. The interior has a modern farmhouse feel. And, the bar and patio is where all the action's at.

The service is friendly, attentive, and on point. And the menu is chock full of mouth watering options.

Even though the portions aren't huge, we left feeling full with leftovers, and no room for Dessert.

The food is priced on the higher side, but you can definitely taste the difference with handmade ingredients.

Hunting The Blind Rabbit - a Speakeasy

For the upcoming holiday, I've planned a whole new type of Easter hunt for you. Instead of eggs, we're "hunting wabbits" – as Elmer Fudd famously said.

The Blind Rabbit is a speakeasy located in the Anaheim Packing District. It's so secretive, their website doesn't list a phone number, and only coordinates are given for the address.

It shares a kitchen with The Iron Press – that's your 1st clue – with dishes literally passed down via chute from upstairs. To the naked eye, The Blind Rabbit's door doesn't really look like one. But if you look real close, you'll find a tiny black rabbit figurine.

Once you step inside, the first thing you'll see is, well, barely anything because the lighting is so dim. But that adds to the charm of the bygone era of the speakeasy. The restaurant is as tiny as a rabbit hole. So, if you plan on going, I highly recommend making reservations well in advance. But very few, like me, just might have the luck of a rabbit's foot and score a spot upon walking in, thanks to someone's prior cancellation.

The Blind Rabbit asks that you don't use a camera flash. Because of that, and our last-minute seating at the bar, the pictures were too hard to decipher, so you're just gonna have to trust me on this "Blind Taste Test".

The Grubdown:

- sinfully rich, savory 'n creamy, Duck Confit Mac & Cheese with Shredded Duck, Three Cheese Bechamel Sauce & Truffle Essence $15

The food is rich and indulgent.

The service is friendly and informative. Tell the bartender what spirits you like and not only will they make you a custom cocktail, but also give you the recipe.

And, keeping with the Speakeasy standards, there are rules to abide by: no baseball caps, shorts, flip flops, or logo T-shirts, no PDA, no camera flashes, and no one under 21 allowed.

From Old to New, The Ritz Restaurant is Back with a View

It's been almost 2 years since The Ritz – an iconic power-lunching & special event restaurant from the 70's – closed down. It was a sad occasion, seeing yet another piece of Newport Beach history crumble.

I remember it like it was yesterday. Trying to get a reservation in their final month was like vying for a back-stage pass to the Vanity Fair Oscars party. I had to pull some strings, and maybe tell a few fibs, but it was well worth revisiting one of my favorite childhood restaurants, just outside Fashion Island.

In an attempt to muster up a joyous spirit despite the inevitable, The Ritz decided to keep their Christmas decorations up through March. Being a lover of all things Christmas, and known to enjoy holiday music year-round, I of course had no problem with this. Nor, did I have a problem with the elbow-rubbing packed capacity of my final night.

I ran into old friends at the old fashioned country club-like mahogany bar. And, old acquaintances too at our black pin-tucked leather booth in the red-carpeted, Victorian wall papered dining room.

The crowd was rip-roaring. Bottles of Champagne were free flowing. And, classics like Escargots En Croute and "The Ritz Egg" were being savored down to the last bite.

While I was sad to see The Ritz go, I was delighted that the new Ritz Prime Seafood – now owned by Grill Concepts – brought "The Ritz Egg" back.

Having opened just this past October in the former Chart House location on Newport Beach's Mariners Mile, the new Ritz looks nothing like the old restaurant. It's shiny, modern, and new with an incredible bay view, and elements of surf and sand.

Like the interior, the menu is new too, featuring Sushi and Lobster Rolls, a Weekend Happy Hour from 10am-5pm, and a Bottomless Champagne Brunch with Bloody Mary Bar.

The Grubdown:

- delicate, organic, creamy 'n rich, The Ritz Egg with Smoked Salmon & Caviar $16

The food was phenomenal – pretty much flawless – and, our waiter James was exceptional, attentive,  and friendly.

Unlike, the former Ritz restaurant's lively closing party, the opening of the new Ritz Prime Seafood was rather quiet. In fact, I didn't even know they re-opened until I saw they were participating in Newport Beach Restaurant Week.

So, make sure to catch the end of it with The Ritz Prime Seafood's Three Course Prix-Fixe Dinner.

Hopefully, the new Ritz is here to stay.

Hopdoddy Burger Bar opens up in Newport Beach

This Thanksgiving, when it's time to toss the turkey and the in-laws out, head on over to the newly opened Hopdoddy Burger Bar in Newport Beach.

Hopdoddy – yes, that's "doddy", not "daddy"– is located in Fashion Island, just past Sushi Roku and across from Kitson. The name combines their love of "hoppy" craft beers, plus their nickname for a "tasty cow", a.k.a. "doddy".

Hoppy Beers served include the Thirsty Planet Buckethead IPA and the 512 IPA. Burgers range from Tasty Cows, like the Primetime with Texas Akaushi Beef to Tasty Fish, like the Sushi-Grade Ahi Tuna Burger.

The restaurant has minimalist decor, great patio seating, an open kitchen to see the chefs in action, and a great bar with housemade Triple Sec in a pitcher.

One thing Hopdoddy does differently is serve all your sides up front, so you have more time to peruse the main courses. Don't fall into this trap, unless you have a fast metabolism, 'cuz you'll end up devouring every last bite of their greasy-in-a-good-way fries and irresistible dips. It's downright dangerous.

P.S. Parents must park their strollers outside, but they do offer clip-on table high chairs complimentary.

New Fall Menu at Boathouse Collective

This past weekend was exciting for many reasons: 1.) It rained, which is my most favorite form of weather despite having grown up in sunny Southern California, a place devoid of said weather 2.) I finally got to try Boathouse Collective, nevermind the fact it's been open for a year.

Boathouse Collective is located in Costa Mesa's industrial area, which is very fitting considering founder Clayton Peterson's vision. He wanted to create an artistic space true to its roots, built from rustic reclaimed woods and vintage nautical decor.

From the outside, you'd never suspect a restaurant was there, as it looks like a hybrid between a gingerbread shack and a hangar. Walk inside and the herb garden patio with communal picnic tables and string lights is to the right, while the bar and center stage is straight ahead. Boathouse Collective features everything from live bands to local business speaking engagements and art shows.

Depending on the type of event, there may be a cover charge, which is why it's best to arrive at Happy Hour, like the hand model and I did. The farm to table cuisine is fresh, layered, and includes a running theme of Housemade pickles throughout almost each dish.

11 New Restaurants To Open in Laguna Beach

Yes, you heard right. 11 new restaurants will be opening in Laguna Beach within a year, according to Stu News Laguna, a Laguna Beach News & Community Forum. Who'd a thought this bohemian, art-centric beach town could turn into such a dining mecca.

- Red Dragon: Mosun/Club M is FINALLY being replaced by a new Cantonese restaurant with chefs straight from Hong Kong. It's slated to open Spring 2016.

- Sail Loft: this rooftop terrace brought to you by the same owner as Mozambique, will feature New Orleans cuisine & Southern BBQ. It's slated to open November/December.

- Urth Cafe: this transplant from LA features Organic Coffee, Fine Teas, and dishes like Natural Beef Hash for breakfast, and Butternut Squash & Ricotta Pizza for lunch. It should open this July/August.

A Post Taste of 320 Main's OC Restaurant Week Menu

The hand model and I finally ventured out to Seal Beach to grab a bite at 320 Main restaurant. I've been wanting to come to this "New American Eatery" ever since I found out they made their own Ginger Beer – ironic, I know. That, coupled with OC Restaurant Week's 3-course prix fixe dinner for $30, which also included 25% off cocktails, seemed like a match made in heaven.

We were seated in a tufted leather booth overlooking the chefs cooking in the kitchen. It's a small space, but they offer a good seating variety from the bar to the patio, and dining room.

The service was very attentive and well-staffed. And, the food from Chef Jaime Carrano (formerly of Bouchon & Charlie Palmer) showcased great French technique and flavor.

The Grubdown:

- super refreshing, sweet 'n spicy, I wanted four more, Cablegram Classic Cocktail with Whiskey, fresh Lime Juice & House-Made Ginger Beer

- bitter, foamy, citrus 'n honey, The Detroiter Signature Cocktail with Cynar, Laird's Bonded Apple Brandy, Lemon, Honey & Stone IPA

- smooth, smokey 'n crunchy, Split Pea Veloute with Bacon Crouton, Chili Oil & Chives

- portion was a tease, dressing didn't overpower, tangy 'n tart, 320 Wedge with Chive Blue Cheese Mousse, Oven Dried Tomato & Bacon Lardon

- unfortunately our piece was un-chewable, but I couldn't get enough of the sides, 6 0z Hanger Steak with Fork Crushed Sunchokes, Broccolini & Mint Chimichurri

- perfect buttery sear, ballsy seafood/meat combo, vinegary lentils as good as Cobras & Matadors', Pan Seared Scottish Salmon with Beluga Lentils & Braised Short Rib

- a little too simple, delicate 'n salty, Parsnip Agnolotti with Wild Mushrooms, Wilted Spinach & Brown Butter

- floaty, foamy, citrus whipped, Meyer Lemon Semi Freddo with Toasted Almonds & Blueberry Gastrique

- too crisp for my liking with a charred edge, sweet 'n salty, Chocolate Bread Pudding Sundae with Banana Ice Cream & Salted Caramel

Ironically, the best dish was the one we had to substitute for our inedible Hangar Steak: the Pan Seared Salmon. Lucky for you, 320 Main offers a similar dish on their regular menu that's accompanied by a Sweet Onion & Apple Puree.

Also, make sure you order the Cablegram Cocktail. If you prefer a Kentucky Mule to a Moscow Mule (made with Bourbon instead of Vodka), don't even think about asking for one because the master mixologist behind the bar won't serve it. However, he will concoct something special for you instead.

A couple weekends ago, the hand model & I finally dined – not just knocked back some pints – at The Iron Press in SOCO.

SOCO is truly shaping up to be one of my favorite spots to eat. From modern Mexican American at Taco Maria to Shuck Oyster Bar and Axe, it truly brings the culinary experience. Did I mention that a Tapas Bar will be opening soon? I couldn't be more delighted, as one of my favorite restaurants of all time – and quite possibly the inspiration behind Your Next Bite – was Cobras & Matadors in LA. We'll see if it measures up. But I digress....

We'd been craving waffles all day, after our failed attempt to find ANY waffles for brunch that morning in the Corona del mar area. So, we decided to get waffle EVERYTHING.

The Quiet Woman - a Corona del Mar Classic

The Quiet Woman Restaurant & Bar is one of the longest standing establishments in Corona del Mar.

Since 1965, they've been serving classic Steak & Seafood dishes – even a lazy susan style Salad with all the fixins for the whole table to share. It's one of the few remaining restaurants where you actually get a lotta bang for your buck in OC. Entrees come with two sides, and there's complimentary Garlic Bread with refills.

All sorts of crowds flock to the "Headless Woman", from young hipsters cocktailing at the bar's nearly impossible to maneuver tables, to cougars & manthers rockin' out to the live band on the intimate dance floor.

They even have Taco Tuesday and late night bar snacks.

Overall, the menu is rather quiet, but the Short Rib is definitely worth a shout out.

Ironically, the Quiet Woman is quite possibly the loudest restaurant & bar on the Corona del Mar strip (now that Landmark is gone), so be prepared with a reservation, or to wait for the bouncer to let you in.

- enjoy bottomless brunch and $5 margi's all night with Japanese & Latin fusion cuisine on the rooftop at Zengo Santa Monica

- take in some American barbecue, my favorite view of "The Hills", and maybe a glimpse from the Bowl's annual fireworks display at The Roof on Wilshire

- the menu's since changed with a much needed upgrade, but The Deck on Laguna Beach has quite possibly the best unobstructed views of the Pacific and local fireworks

Spectacular Food & Bay Views at The Winery in Newport Beach

Last week the hand model took me out for a birthday surprise dinner at newly-opened The Winery Restaurant in Newport Beach. Located in the old Villa Nova spot, the already multiple award-winning restaurant has had a major face-lift with modern accents (same contracter as Charlie Palmer's & Pizzeria Mozza), a 14-foot high glass private wine locker, high top bar, and expansive views of the bay.

We were seated in a booth right on the window. It offered loads of entertainment from grandiosely expensive yachts passing by to the oncoming tipsy Duffy drivers trying to pull into the valet dock.

The crowd was chic and the music overhead ranged from piano jazz to old school Ice Cube.

Our service was superb from the changing of silverware at each course to our waitress who suggested not to look at the menu before learning the specials because it could change our plan entirely.

The Grubdown:

- wish there was more of the sweet 'n tender scallops, could've eaten a whole bowl of the creamy risotto with a spicy kick, reduction is better suited for steak, Jumbo Maine Scallops and Wild White Shrimp with Saffron Roasted Red Pepper Edamame Bean Risotto & Crispy Proscuitto $32.95

- same reduction as the scallops, meat has medium thickness, couscous is clean 'n spongey, Slow Braised Angus Beef Shortrib with Zinfandel Reduction, Carrot infused Pearl CousCous & Proscuitto Wrapped Asparagus $29.95

Having been to both locations, I honestly don't know how anyone could return to Tustin. The Newport Beach location offers so much more like 10,000 square feet and a second story patio overlooking a view that can't be beat.

Sunday Brunchin' at George's at The Cove in La Jolla

As the weather gets warmer and summer approaches, there's no better place to bask in the sun for brunch than George's at The Cove in La Jolla.

Make sure to score a reservation beforehand, as the wait can be up to two hours. But, if you're stuck in line, belly up to the ocean terrace bar. There you can order from their bistro menu, and down cocktails like the Bloody Mary with house-infused Jalapeno & Bell Pepper Vodka $10 or The Skinny (only 120 calories) with Absolut Vodka, Kiwi, Strawberry & Lime $13.

When seated at a table, you'll enjoy views of La Jolla's cove from the packs of divers & kayakers in the Pacific to the seals below. (Bite Advice: you might not want to sit too close to the edge, if you nose what I mean).

My favorite spot to dine is the round table in the far left corner. It's perfect for a group of 6-8 and you feel like the world is your oyster – well, at least the view is.

Here's what dishes to grub on from Executive Chef & Partner, Trey Foshee, at one of San Diego's consistently voted 'Most Popular Restaurants" by Zagat.

What's better than finally scoring that reservation at hip Laurel Hardware restaurant in LA? Stumbling home a mere 4 blocks away to your glamorous 1113 N Sweetzer Ave one-bedroom suite with old Hollywood charm.

This caringly restored 1951 building is far from a "complex". The grounds are like an English garden with center courtyard and peaceful fountain. Each 750+ sq. ft. suite offers bright natural light, floor-to-ceiling windows, large entertaining & kitchen areas, newly re-glazed soaking tubs, brand new hardwood floors, built-in shelving, and crown moulding, of course.

And the location can't be beat, just steps from Santa Monica Blvd.'s Marix Tex Mex Restaurant, Connie And Ted's, Yoshi's Sushi (blog to come!), and of course, Laurel Hardware.

Step up to the "store" and a bouncer greets you at the door. Walk inside and you'll find a dismal looking diner. Don't break your pace, just keep on cruising, until you hit the "scene". Industrial beams make up the bar on the left, while warm woods, candlelight, and brocade wallpaper fill the booths on the right (along with Russell Brand that night).

If you can manage to cut through the crowded center high-top tables, a beautiful tree-lit patio awaits you outside, suitable just for cocktailing. (The Sunday Sipper is just what the doctor ordered with Muddled Blueberries, Black Tea, Mint, Ginger Sprigs, clove-spiced Velvet Falernum & Larceny Kentucky Straight Bourbon $12)

The Grubdown:

- lemony, red peppery, crunchy, starchy, puffy & bigger than the old school snack, Cancha House Spiced "Corn Nuts" $4

- perfect rectangular cut, I wanted the bowl all to myself, House Cut Fries with Maldon Salt, Chives & Rocoto Aioli $5

- if you eat plain kale salad daily you'll enjoy this over-dressed, heavier, creamier, indulgent version, Lollipop Sprouts with Avocado, Pepitas & House Made "Ranch" $12

- sensing a theme here, they like to overdress & sweeten their salads, Bloomsdale Spinach with Smoked Almonds, Radishes, Mixed Herbs & Spiced Yogurt $12

- somehow tasted like apple pie rice pudding with citrus and fennel, Green Barley with Tangelos, Rhubarb & Shiso Vinaigrette $12

- great contrast of bitter greens and cardamom-like Christmas spice, Braised Beef Shoulder with Baby Kale, Beet Gastrique & Quince Butter $22

Happy Hour at The Bungalow in Corona del Mar

In honor of my cousin's upcoming wedding this weekend, I figure I'd blog about a nearby happy hour for all my east coast family members to visit.

Every Monday through Friday, The Bungalow in Corona del Mar off PCH offers $6 Martinis, $4 Beers (Green Flash IPA!), $5 House Wines, and $4.75 Well Cocktails from 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM. The bar has a couple flat screen TVs to watch your favorite game, and there are usually enough high-top tables to share. I love the warm woods, dark lighting, and cozy feeling I get whenever I walk in, as everyone there – including the wait staff – is friendly and makes you feel welcome.

Behind the bar is the steakhouse & fresh seafood restaurant I've yet to try. And at the back is a pleasant, string-lit, covered patio that's perfect to enjoy during summer.

The Grubdown:

- best bang for your buck, juicy with plump Tomato & Pickle slices and devilish Garlic Parmesan Fries, Two Bungalow Burger Sliders & Fries $7

- soft with crisp outside, more breading than meat, Lobster & Corn Fritters with Mango Chutney $8

Last time we visited, the table next to us ordered the Bungalow Mac & Cheese. It looked down-home good, so I'd recommend splitting it, especially if you're ordering the aforementioned fried goodies.

The bar menu "does the job", but if you have time I'd suggest staying for dinner with lavish options like Miso Chilean Sea Bass or a Prime Flat Iron Steak Oscar topped with King Crab Meat.

Seafood & unobstructed ocean views at The Deck Laguna Beach

Pacific Edge Hotel's The Deck is the closest you'll get to ordering a drink with sand in your feet. Situated in a former Hollywood star's beach house in Laguna, The Deck serves up your standard seafood fare, cocktails, and your favorite hits – all in reggae form – by The Dub Rock Duo.

To be frank, you don't really come here for anything but the view. The minute you step foot on the "deck" that vacation feeling takes over – unfortunately for the servers too. So grab a table up front, get ready to watch the sunset, and wait around for your drinks – especially if it's the weekend. 

Same goes for the food. On the Sunday we arrived, some of the menu items disappointingly were no longer available (including ingredients in dishes we had already ordered, that our server neglected to tell us about.)

The Grubdown:

- the best & most creative dish we ordered, spicy 'n sweet with a fresh crunch, Ahi Chips with Pepper & Paprika Crust, Cabbage Salad & Citrus Soy Glaze on a Wonton $15

- pretty standard, wish they were crispier, the noodles made it a meal, Coconut Shrimp with Sweet Chile Sauce & Asian Noodles $14 (not pictured)

- the crab was missing and we were pretty crabby about it, at least the sweet 'n sesame seaweeed salad offered salvation, Ahi & (Missing Crab) Stack with Mango Coulis & Wasabi Aioli $15

- plump and served "up", Shrimp Cocktail with Cocktail Sauce $15

- all the essential tastes blended nicely, acid, sweet, earthy, and spicy Spinach Salad with Walnuts, Raspberries, Green Apple Slices, Red Onions, Blue Cheese & Balsamic Vinaigrette $11

- overseared and dry, sauce was lemony 'n velvety, Alaskan Halibut with Sunburst Clams, Chorizo & Broccoli instead of Zucchini (they must have run out again) $32

For how high the prices were, the food just missed the mark. But I have to admit, the Banana Bread Pudding our neighbor ordered smelled and looked divine.

If you haven't visited Billy's At The Beach, then you haven't truly been to Newport. Since moving down to OC, I've literally been waiting 5 months for Whole Foods Market to open up in Fashion Island, Newport Beach. Last Wednesday, September 19th was the glorious day, when I finally stepped foot into my favorite, local, organic playground (I missed you old friend).

From the fire-pit patio to the new "Tea Hive" fusion concept cafe and new "Back Bay Tavern", now I know where I'll be spending every Friday night.

The Tavern features 25+ beers (some draft, some bottled), $2 off Happy Hour Beer specials til 7pm, wines like Hitching Post Pinot Noir, and food from Kale Salads to Burgers – all served atop a 1930's Mahogany bar originally from a Harlem gin joint, which later appeared in the movie "Revolutionary Road". (Regular booths, table and outside seating are available for non-celebs too.)

The Grubdown:

- perfectly shredded, light 'n sweet with mild bitterness, Mediterranean Cal Organic Chopped Kale Salad with Lemon Tahini Dressing $9

- skip the Chips and go straight for the nice golden crunch, fluffy center Local Brew Battered Fish with killer Red Pepper Aioli Dip served on traditional newspaper $11

Overall I was very impressed with the Tavern. It's removed enough in its own wing with outdoor patio seating, so you don't feel like you're at a grocery store. And the bartenders, especially "Tiny", couldn't be friendlier.

I'm so glad to have a "Cheers" bar in my neighborhood, where I guarantee, everyone will know my name.

Last week's winds blew in some fantastic city views. And the new luxury boutique Hotel Wilshire is the perfect place to capture it all. Looking onto the Hollywood Hills from Wilshire Blvd & Crescent Heights, Chef Eric Greenspan (of The Foundry on Melrose) dishes up everything from California Japanese fusion, like the Nori Nachos, to down-home comfort food like Burgers & Brussel Sprouts with Bacon.

Whether you're sitting at the swanky bar sipping on Glamourous Glennis $12 (Orange Vodka, Ginger Liquor, Grapefruit Juice & Candied Ginger), dining poolside in a cozy cabana, or throwing your own private bash on the fireside balcony, The Roof on Wilshire is the next hottest place to be – cold weather or not.

This week YourNextBite is taking a much needed vacay to a location that'll be disclosed upon return (with delectable tropical bites for you to salivate over, of course). In the meantime, I encourage you to indulge in the next best thing – The Beachcomber in Crystal Cove, Orange County.

This marvelous stretch of beach thrived in the 1920's as a place for families to summer. Now, it's perhaps one of the only places you can still be served a cocktail right on the beach.

While I've yet to make it inside the actual restaurant – the wait can be up to 2 hours, so make reservations well in advance – I've made it to The Bootlegger Bar at the back several times.

I'm not gonna lie, I do think the food at Goal is a bit overpriced. But at least Chef Jonah Johnson delivers with each bite.

Of course I had to order one of their signature burgers. The other, the 1/2 lb Juicy J ($15), is stuffed with Pepper Jack Cheese – not my hand model's favorite – so we went with The Cheesy Chuck. While it instantly reminded me of an old-fashioned diner burger with cooling Shredduce & Mayo and thick juicy Tomato, my counterpart thought it tasted more like Fatburger. Either way, we definitely enjoyed it, except for the mysterious patch of Salty Chili Powder seasoning hidden in 2 of my bites.

While I haven't tried Goal's French Fries, I strongly recommend getting their Housemade Potato Chips with your entree. They're a bit thicker than normal, taste like they're half-baked, and are fried in a blend of trans-fat free Canola & Corn Oil. My hand model and I were fighting over every last chip.

Now, I'm totally not a wingman – no, I'm not referring to the Pauly D "Situation" on Jersery Shore – but I do happen to love Goal's Pirate Wings. Their secret Pirate Sauce tastes like a blend between BBQ and Sweet 'n Sour with the slightest hint of Buffalo spice. They're crispy on the outside, and super tender 'n moist on the inside. I ate them so fast I forgot to take a close up shot.

Goal also serves Mini Corn Dogs ($9), Nachos ($10), and a Rib Eye Baseball Steak ($20). Lighter items include Ceviche Cocktail ($13), 3 different Salads ($9-12), a Veggie Burger ($12), Tequila Lime Shrimp ($18), and The End Zone with Caribbean Chicken, Salad & Coconut Basmati Rice ($20). For Dessert you can indulge in the Superbowl Sundae with Raspberry Sauce & Brownies ($12) or a bold – in flavor and ABV – Chimay on tap.

LA Miracle Mile St. Patrick's Day Bar Hopping Gameplan

LA Biters – I couldn't forget about you.

The Gameplan:

1.) Start the night off early at Whole Foods Market on 3rd & Fairfax for $1 Irish beer & cheese tastings from 5-7pm.

2.) Then walk across the street to LA's Original Farmers Market to put down some pints of Guinness & Harp Lager at $3.50 a pop at EB's and 326 bars – don't worry, they got the green beer too. Get your Corned Beef & Cabbage fix at Magee's Kitchen. Then sit down and enjoy DJ Tom Blarney's beats, starting at 6pm.

3.) Next, head south on Fairfax about a block to Sheddy's to get the last of the happy hour drinks ending at 8pm.

4.) By now you might be feelin' lucky enough to get your Irish jig on to some live music at Molly Malone's: I-94 @ 8:30pm, Culann's Hounds @ 9:45pm, and Dead Rabbits @ 11pm.

5.) And if you want to get in some real shenanigans, end the night at Tom Bergin's, about 3 blocks south of Wilshire, still on Fairfax. There might be a huge line around the corner, but what the heck, it's only St. Patty's Day once a year.

Put down some pints from all over the United Kingdom like Guinness & Smithwick's Ale from Dublin, Boddingtons from Manchester, England, and Newcastle Brown. Or, wash down some whiskey – they serve 11 different kinds all from Ireland – like a 21 year old Bushmills, Jameson 1780, and a very rare Middleton from County Cork. By the end of the night, 1 of their 7 juicy flame-broiled to order, 100% angus beef 1/2 pound burgers might be calling your name – like the St. Patty's with vintage Tillamook cheddar, oak-smoked bacon, and homemade guacamole. (And a word to the wise, order your fries "Parmesan style" like they used to serve them back in the day.)

While there's no green beer – word is customer's have complained about it turning their mouths green – they do have a green Absinthe Fountain to lift your spirits and help you see that pot o' gold at the end of the rainbow.
