When I think of the 4th of July, the first thing I crave is a Hot Dog...followed by a Hamburger, Corn on the Cobb, Potato Chips, and Apple Crisp, all in that order.
But, I digress. This 4th of July, it's time to celebrate not just any old Hot Dog, but the Top Dogs of Orange County and Los Angeles.
So, whether you prefer Kobe Beef, Turkey, or a good 'ole fashioned American Wiener, here are three Top Dogs from Laguna Beach to Newport Beach and roaming mobile in LA to ring in America's Birthday.
- super filling, plump, fat, snappy 'n juicy, Kobe Hot Dog "New York style" with Sauerkraut & Housemade Dijon Mustard, on their secret bakery Brioche & Pretzel Sprinkled Roll $12
This past weekend was the 5th annual OC Weekly Summerfest 2017. It's hard to believe it was my first time attending, being that it's held at one of my favorite venues, the Newport Dunes in Newport Beach.
It's a great place, perched on the bay overlooking paddle-boarders, swimmers, and oversized inflatable water slide launcher-off-ers.
The event took place on Saturday from 1pm to 5pm. The hand model and I were debating whether or not to get the VIP Package ($50 per person, which included a Shrub Tasting Garden overlooking the bay and tons of Farm-to-Table bites from local restaurants), or the General Admission Ticket ($35 per person, which was in the parking lot with food truck vendors at $5 each).
- second best for surprisingly flavorful 'n delish vegetarian dish, White Bean Summer Chili with Squash, Tomato, Green Onion, Cornbread, and Greek Yogurt
- bright fresh 'n spicy, Albacore Tataki with Avocado, Jalapeno, Toasted Sesame & Yuzu Ponzu (pictured right) and their famous Tuscan Kale Salad (pictured left)
- another vegetarian dish stole the show with fresh fruit 'n spice, Chana Masala with Pomegranate Seeds, Toasted Vermicelli & Pasta (pictured left) and spicy tender Chicken Tikka (pictured right)
- i voted "Most Unique" & "Best Lookin'" because you literally tasted every flavor, Coconut Shrub with Coconut Fat Washed Titos Vodka, Pineapple Chocolate Shrub, Pineapple Juice, Lime Juice & Smoked Sea Salt
The VIP Package definitely delivered 100% from endless complimentary cocktails to upscale farm-to-table tastings, and live bands all with a bay view.
Meanwhile, back at the General Admission parking lot, there were food trucks with fare for $5 (say that five times fast), Whiskey tastings, and farmer's market delivery vendors, as well as the star of the show, the main stage featuring bands like Pacific Dub.
And, no matter which package you chose, everyone got to take home a complimentary goodie bag.
- even though it was the side dish, it stole the show, Halibut Special with Butter Lemon Sauce, Rustic creamy garlicky Mashed Potatoes & Brussels Sprouts
A couple weekends ago, the hand model and I enjoyed one of my favorite things to do – dinner and a movie outside.
We visited The OC Great Park Movie on the Lawn for the first time. To my surprise, several food trucks were there, including Dogtown Dogs, Crepes Bonaparte, and We Heart Froyo.
The one that stood out the most, however, was Soho Taco. They take the gourmet food truck concept to the next level, by placing a host with mini table out in front for customers to place their orders.
And their food is just as gourmet too, from the highest grade meats to "heirloom" recipe sauces and irresistibly fluffy handmade Tortillas.
- juicy 'n tender with crunchy veg and a flakey bun, Grass and Grain-fed Smoked Tri Tip Sandwich with Grilled Peppers, Onion, and Side of Cole Slaw $8 (Half Order)
- the best of all the meats, tender, juicy 'n fatty in all the right ways, Natural Black Angus Brisket with Brown Sugar & Coffee Rub and House Pickled Escabeche $16
This week's humid weather & gray skies got me hungry for some old-fashioned, east coast Lobster Rolls.
As a kid, I'd visit my mom's side of the family in Rhode Island every 'summa' and enjoy the fruits of the sea, from Fried Clams to Quahogs, and of course chunky buttery 'Lobstah' on a Toasted Split Roll.
Thankfully, over the past couple years, restaurants and food trucks all over the west coast have been paying tribute to this treasured seafood trove.
Here's a list of where to indulge in the great Lobster Roll, no matter which coast you reside in.
- finally a REAL Rhode Island SPLIT toasted bun Lobster Roll with a ridiculous bounty of Buttery Lobster Chunks that were so tender, they fell apart in my mouth $20
- the plumpest, butteriest, juiciest, sweetest, tenderest Lobster you ever ate, tempts you to ditch the roll 'cuz it's so good on its own, but who could miss that rustic crusty goodness from my roots, Sauteed Lobster Roll in Butter & White Wine on a Portuguese Roll $22
Fellow biters, it's hard to believe that 4 years' ago, Your Next Bite launched with a little amuse-bouche.
Living in LA's constantly changing restaurant scene became my inspiration for this "delectable quest to find you the best from Fine Dining to Food Trucks". And now that OC is my main brick & mortar, it's been a spicy challenge seeking out the hidden gems of this new territory.
Just like a great meal, Your Next Bite is always evolving. It began with not one, but two weekly posts – a weekly restaurant blog plus "Food Truck Friday". Today, it's about quality, not quantity, with just the one per week and the occasional Your Next Nite special edition to transport your taste buds.
As a thank you to all you loyal biters – and to new ones gained daily – I'm serving up my Top 4 Biteries from each category: LA, OC, Food Truck, and Your Next Nite.
As of a lover of New England food with family from the region, nothing makes me happier than a bounty of Lobster trucks roamin' across SoCal.
Last weekend Roger's Gardens hosted the Cousins Maine Lobster Truck. (I've tried the Lobsta Truck before, and was curious to see what its competition was all about.) Real cousins, Sabin Lomac and Jim Tselikis, hail from Portland, Maine. Reportedly, they spent each family celebration with a pot of steamed red Lobsters and a Blueberry Pie (insert picture of paradise here). In 2012, they launched their first truck, serving sustainably harvested lobsters fresh from Maine’s icy cold waters.
How could anyone pass that up on such a hot & humid 95 degree day? Plus, I couldn't say no to my Rhode Islander mother who was just DYING for a "lobstah roll".
The Grubdown:
- bountiful in size, overflowing with Lobster, cool 'n creamy Chilled Maine Lobster Roll with Mayo on a New England Style Split Toasted Bun $12.75
- delicate, brings out the fluffiness in the bun and let's the sweet Lobster shine, Warmed Connecticut Lobster Roll with Butter & Lemon on a New England Style Split Toasted Bun $12.75
- crisp, salty, perfect rounds, minus the sand from the beach of my childhood summers, Cape Cod Chips $2 (not pictured)
Which Lobster Roll was better? That's like asking Sophie's Choice. Bring a friend, or a big appetite and get both. (My mother swears by the Warm butter roll though.)
Compared to the Lobsta Truck, Cousins Maine has a bigger roll, more lobster chunks & impressive whole claws, and a ton more on the menu like Lobster Tails, Tacos, and Shrimp Rolls.
They've also got a storefront in Pasadena. For now, I'll be patiently awaiting their next visit to the OC at Rogers Gardens Saturday, September 28th.
Last Sunday, the hand model and I took a stroll to Roger's Gardens for some Basil...and Waffles.
If you haven't heard, every weekend from 11am to 2pm, Roger's hosts food trucks on the back lot near the herb garden. And with each food truck purchase, you'll receive a $5 off coupon to spend inside.
Since it was Sunday brunch for us, we couldn't resist the sweet smell of piping hot Liege Waffles from the Waffle-icious Food Truck. They import the good stuff from Belgium, like Pearl Sugar which caramelizes when baked, leaving a a sweet crunch in every warm, fluffy bite.
The Grubdown:
- oozing with thick melted gooey cheese, savory, smokey, and the jam gives it a necessary sweet acid kick, The Full Monty Cristo Liege Waffle with Havarti & Cheddar Cheese, Black Forest Ham, Oven Roasted Turkey, Powdered Sugar & Raspberry Preserves $8
- more than generous helping of fruit, don't be shy with the Whipped Cream to cut the sweetness, Nutella & Strawberries Liege Waffle with Powdered Sugar $5.50
My favorite was the Monty Cristo because I just can't get enough of a sweet 'n salty combo. My hand model, the purist, liked the dessert option of course.
We both left the meal feeling stuffed to the gills as the Liege Waffles themselves are huge on their own.
Make sure to buy a drink to help wash down all the ooey gooey-ness. And don't plan on eating for another 6 hours, even if you share. (Your $8 will last you long!)
What's more American than Apple Pie? Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, and Fries.
Over the years, I've been collecting juicy bites of each from food truck to restaurant. So this 4th of July, play it safe with my top pics from San Diego to L.A.
- crunchy, salty, tough 'n juicy The Original All Beef Greasy Wiener with
Sauerkraut, Sauteed Onions, Pickle Slice & Mustard $4 The Greasy Wiener Food Truck, LA
HAMBURGERS & FRIES
- crispy charcoal edged bun, tender 'n greasy, one of the best I've
had in a long time All Natural Brandt Beef Burger with Gruyere Cheese,
Caramelized Onions, Housemade Pickles & Dijonaise on a buttery
Brioche Bun with addictive Peanut Oil French Fries $13 Starlite, San Diego
- classic, fat 'n juicy, super filling, spilling with cheese, pillowy bun,
Crow Boy Burger with American Cheese, House Made Ketchup, Pickle Relish
& Shredded Lettuce on a Buttermilk Bun $6.45 Crow Burger Kitchen, OC
- perfect for a healthy crunch, just the right amount of oil &
char, Grilled Green Bean "Fries" with savory 'n smooth Olive Tapenade
$5.95 Crow Burger Kitchen, OC
- addicting, melt in your mouth, Sweet Potato Fries with Blue Cheese Aioli $5.95 Crow Burger Kitchen, OC
- cooked perfectly, melty cheese, yummy buttery bun, tangy sweet "The Burger" with Harris Ranch Natural Beef, Fiscalini Farms Cheddar, Glazed Applewood Smoked Bacon, Arugula, Housemade Aioli & Ketchup ($10 includes 1 side) Golden State Cafe, LA
- tender, juicy, oozy Original Beauty
Burger with Swiss, Grilled Onions, Sauteed Mushrooms & Baby's Secret
Sauce (like a creamier version of IN-N-OUT's) $8 Baby's Badass Burgers Food Truck, LA
Before you ruin yourself on Cinco De Mayo, make a run for it at the Tacos & Beer 5K in Long Beach.
Hosted by Exitos 93.9 FM on Saturday the 4th, this event is genius. Not only does it start at 9am (sleep in time!) with a trail race thru the hills and wilderness, but it ends with mariachi music, DJs like the Mexican Dubwiser, live bands such as Zapoteca Roots, comedy, and most importantly food trucks & a beer garden.
I used to write a Food Truck Friday blog every week. Who'd a thought, after moving to OC, they'd follow me down to one of my favorite places, Roger's Gardens.
Every Saturday & Sunday, food trucks like SeaBirds & The Lobsta Truck roll into Roger's back parking lot at The Victory Garden from 11am to 2pm. And when I saw the Bite Me Foods truck last Sunday, emblazoned with "Seasonal Local Organic" and a big pink Hollywood sign, I couldn't help but feel a little hungry for LA.
The Grubdown:
- warm 'n comforting, the cake itself has great moisture, but the greens are dry, Potato Leek & Quinoa Cakes with Parmesan, Mozzarella, Kale & Sauteed Mushrooms on a bed of Spinach with Maple Mustard Drizzle $8
- a little deceiving because they're not whole, more like a shaved salad strong in charcoal & garlic flavors, Crispy Brussel Sprouts with Bacon & Maple Mustard Drizzle $5
I was surprised by how small Bite Me Food's menu was, yet still it covered every base: Fish Tacos, Steak & Brie Croissants, Kids Quesadillas, and the aforementioned.
The servers were sweet, hand delivering our food to us at the tables. I just wish the food was better dressed.
This Saturday Oct. 15th, don't miss the South Bay Food Fest at the Home Depot Center in Carson. The Food includes 25 Gourmet Food Trucks, 5 Top South Bay Restaurants, cooking demonstrations, and eating contests. The Fun includes a Budweiser Beer Garden, live entertainment from the likes of The Common Kings, a Kids Zone with Pumpkin Patch, and LA's greatest amusement – FREE PARKING!
VIPs ($40) get early admission at 12pm with private cabanas and access to the American Express Stadium Club overlooking the Food Truck field. General Admission starts at 1pm for $12 with limited $10 presale tickets. (The event goes 'til 7pm.)
Below is a list of previously reviewed trucks that'll be attending and what to order.
The Grubdown:
- wacky gourmet architectural pieces of ice cream sandwich art, Cool Haus - it's all about the Brown Butter Bacon & Chunky Chocolate Chip
- my fav transplant from Rhode Island and perfect summer treat, Del's Lemonade - stick with The Original and savor each Frozen Lemon Peel
- over indulgent carb fest, you can't finish a whole one, FrySmith - lighten up with the Vegan Chili that's so good, you won't be able to tell the difference
- the truck that started it all, Korean BBQ Kogi - stick with the classic Kimchi Quesadilla and whatever weekly special they dreamt up next
- definitely one of my top 5 favorite food trucks, Shrimp Pimp - the Drunkin Shrimp Taco and Frylander Fish 'n Chips are a must
P.S. Toys for Tots will be there. Bring a $5 unwrapped toy and you'll get a voucher for an $8 admission ticket.
This weekend, Drink:Eat:Play is throwin' a Block Party with bands, beers, and food trucks all staged at the New York lot inside Paramount Studios, Hollywood. YourNextPint attended their LA Beer Fest a couple years back, and while there was plenty of beer to go around, people were puttin' up a fight for the food. (So make sure you're blood sugar's prepared to stand in line.) Tickets cost $40 for General Admission (4-7pm), and $50 for VIP (3-7pm).
Here's a list of trucks I've blogged in the past that'll be on set. (Bite Advice: click on the links for my tasty review.)
The Grubdown:
- Dogtown Dogs: go light 'n crisp with The California Dog
- India Jones: the tangy Lamb Frankie is a must order
- FrySmith: you can't believe it's not meat Vegan Chili Fries
- Komodo: freak out your tastebuds with the Fish 'n Grapes Taco
Last night, fine dining met food truck fare at Eva Restaurant with a $50 5-course Grilled Cheese Night menu collaboration with my favorite, the Grilled Cheese Truck. In honor of National Grilled Cheese Month, I couldn't have been more thankful – especially since I'd spent the 2 days prior mourning over Meltworks' elimination on America's Next Great Restaurant. (The grilled cheese "fast casual" restaurant concept I thought was as solid as a brick of cheese, and it had my mind spinning all night thinking up crazy combinations.) But I digress.
If you haven't been to Eva on Beverly Blvd yet, it's a cozy little gem with refined local dishes resembling modern works of art. If you haven't been to the Grilled Cheese Truck to try my favorite Cheesy Mac & Rib (Macaroni & Cheese AND Short Rib stuffed inside a Grilled Cheese Sandwich) then something is seriously wrong with you.
As for last night's menu collaboration, Eva definitely classed up the Truck – specifically with their spin on the Truffled Mac & Cheese and Lobster course. On the other hand, the Faux-ly Cheesesteak course was the closest thing to "fast casual" with ingredients that reminded me of "what a hamburger's all about."
The Grubdown:
- herb-speckled 'n savory parm crusted Sharp Cheddar, Gruyere & Parmesan Grilled Cheese with freshly pureed, more acidic than creamy Tomato Soup
- standout flavors, perhaps the best balanced dish of the night Triple Creme Brie, Caramelized Onions, Proscuitto & Black Peppercorn Grilled Cheese with slightly bitter Braised Artichoke balanced by thick 'n creamy Potato Onion Puree
- more like a deconstructed IN-N-OUT Burger Faux-ly Cheesesteak Charcoal-Crusted Prime Rib of Beef, sweet Homemade Pickles, Crispy Fried Onions, Cheez Whiz nacho secret sauce, and Provolone French Bread Sandwich on the side
- as decadent as it gets, so worth the extra $ sweet Butter Poached Lobster with very faint Truffled Mac & Cheese stuffed Fontina Sandwich
- not cream cheesy enough, melted too fast, thin and a bit soggy Vanilla Mascarpone on more-like-wheat-than Brioche with Balsamic Strawberries & Chocolate Fondue
While the dessert dish was my least favorite, I was very glad I decided to go with the 5-course for $50 that included the Lobster dish vs. the 4-course for $35.
All in all, cowboy hat sporting Eva Chef Mark Gold and Grilled Cheese Truck owner Dave Dahni definitely delivered and I can't wait for more!

Wow. Happy 1 year Blogiversary to YourNextBite.com. Can you believe it's been 1 whole year?!? So as a thank you to all my Twitter followers and fans, I'm giving you, Your Next Two-fer. Speaking in algebra terms, Kogi is to Alibi Room as Frysmith is to Loaded Bar. In other words, Loaded Rock Bar at 6377 Hollywood Blvd (between Ivar & Cahuenga) is now serving Frysmith food truck's full menu (just like the Alibi Room on Washington Blvd serves Kogi), seven days a week from 4-11pm.
Frysmith's grand opening there was just 1 week ago. Now you can get loaded with $3 whiskey specials on Wednesdays, $3 Tequila shots on Thursdays, etc., then sober yourself up with a load of carbs like Vegan Chili or Kimchi. And just in time for St. Patrick's Day, Frysmith is dishin out an Irish fusion special – Spiced Corned Beef, Beer & Chipotle Cabbage, Jack & Parmesan Cheese.
The Grubdown:
- can't even tell they're Vegan, refried bean texture, coriander spicey Vegan Chili Fries with Organic Tomato, Mixed Beans, Soy Chorizo, Smoked Paprika & Chopped Red Onion $5
- limey, creamy, sweet onioney, tobascoey, tender juicy beefy Rajas Fries with Fire-Roasted Poblano Chiles, Caramelized Onions, Shawarma-Marinated Angus Skirt Steak & Jack Cheese $7
The fries were perfectly cooked, and the sizes were massive. My hand model and I couldn't finish either of our portions, but we made a significant dent (check out the 5th food picture for evidence) in the Vegan Chili version as recommend by Loaded's bartender. The Rajas was a lot to handle with a lot of flavors going on. But if you're lucky enough to grab the perfect morsel, your tastebuds will be singin' a symphony.
Unfortunately, Loaded wasn't serving the St. Patty's Day special as Frysmith had tweeted earlier (and they ran out of the Vegan Daiya Cheese too). So, "Biters", in honor of mixing it up for a new year to come, I'd love to hear your tweets & comments on the St. Patty's Corned Beef Special if you make it out past the Blarney Stone tomorrow night.
Finally, the third – and best – installment of the 2011 Santa Anita Park Food Truck Festival. It's a bit ironic that my hand model and I's food fest, or lack there of, came to a halt with Indian food from the Naan Stop Truck. Especially since by the time we got there, there was almost nada Naan left.
What were able to scrounge up, though, was heart-warming and stomach satisfying. I'd definitely order the Tandoori Paneer in a heartbeat, and can't wait to drool over the Masala Fries next time.
- stewed to perfection, a little fatty, Lamb slow-cooked for hours in Tomato, Onion & Yogurt Gravy
- had the most depth and flavor of the bunch, tomato buttery, smokey char, ricotta creamy Tandoori Paneer Indian Cheese with Yogurt, Lemon Juice, Ginger, Cardamom, Cinnamon, Cumin, Coriander, Chili Powder & Turmeric
Happy Food Truck Friday biters! As promised, here's my Coolhaus Truck review from the Santa Anita Park Food Truck Festival a couple weeks ago. Whilst strategizing in the fest's hour-long lines, my friends and I spotted the Coolhaus Truck. Even though we had yet to get something savory like breakfast or lunch down, the sun was blazing super hot and we were so starving, that nothing sounded better than Coolhaus' creamy cool & crazy-flavored ice creams.
I got uncontrollably excited when I saw the Earl Grey Le Corbus-Tea-Er – my favorite tea of all time – on the menu, so of course I had to order it. Same with the Guinness Chip, as I'm a beer lover too (check out my other blog YourNextPint.com). Unfortunately, the Earl Grey Tea got lost in the festival kerfuffle, but I was quite surprised by what Coolhaus ended up scoopin' up for me instead.
The Grubdown:
- it's genius, just like a float without the extra pop Root Beer Ice Cream ($1)
- great cream & texture, first bite is hoppy espresso, followed by a not-so-pleasing chemical aftertaste Guinness Chip Ice Cream ($1)
Out of the two, surprisingly, the Root Beer was much better. And even though I decided to forgo the Cookie Sandwich this time (check out my review on Brown Butter & Candied Bacon and Red Velvet flavors here), I imagine it would taste spectacular with the Snickerdoodle Cookie.
Next week, the final installment of the Santa Anita Food Truck Festival with my reivew on Naan Stop.
Finally, here's Your Next Bite's follow up to the "pony up" at the 2011 Santa Anita Park Food Truck Festival 2 weeks ago. The day couldn't have been more perfect – the sun was shining bright, not a cloud was in the sky – then came the hour-long lines, only to be denied food from the sold-out trucks.
I'm not gonna lie, the Fest was a bit of a mess. My hand model, friends, and I were some of the lucky ones to get a few last dishes from Barbie's Q, Coolhaus, and Naan Stop before the poor hundreds of souls left starving behind us – but not without a strategic plan of course. We definitely worked for our food, each spreading out in 3 different 60 minute+ lines, communicating via cell phone, whilst melting in the sun.
To give you a taste of what we went thru, I'm gonna draw this review out starting with Barbie's Q this week, Coolhaus next week, then finally Naan Stop.
When my friend and I galloped up to Barbie's Q, the only reason we even had a chance was because all the meat was sold out, and only Veggie Sandwiches were left. At this point we were so starving, it didn't even matter. So we stood ground and, low and behold, Barbie's Q found some "extra" chicken, then later on "pork" (which we'd missed), too.
The Grubdown:
- impressive, stole the show, sweet smokey 'n tender Veggie BBQ Sandwich
- every kind and color, chili sweet Barbeque Beans
- kinda slimy 'n sausage chewy-like "questionable" Chicken BBQ Sandwich (I steered clear, but my friends ate it and paid for it later)
- thin, crisp 'n light, a little soupy but satisfying Cole Slaw
The Santa Anita Food Truck Festival was good in theory, but unfortunately, and ironically, the farthest thing from a horse race. Hopefully next year they'll get the lines and food inventory situated.
Next week, Root Beer and Guiness Ice Cream from Coolhaus.
As in the title of one my favorite songs off Kings of Leon newest album, "Pony Up" to the Santa Anita Food Truck Festival, this Saturday from 11:00am-4:30pm. Enjoy a SUPERFECTA of over 20 Food Trucks, a Wine Fest, a Gastropub, and Live Music.
Below are links to reviews of 8 participating food truck favorites that WON a special PLACE in my heart – ok, ok I'll stop SHOWing off my horse racing lingo.
There's no need to hesitate when it comes to ordering Raw Fish from the latest Japanese Sushi on wheels, Temaki Truck. Despite my Raw Diet Detox, the Temaki Truck was kind enough to accommodate my strict no grain (amongst a laundry list of others things) policy. Instead, they stuffed my Hand Rolls chock full of Cucumber Strips and probably snuck a little extra Sushi inside too.
- squishy in a good way, sesame seed crunch, velvety "Slammin' Salmon" Spicy Salmon Hand Roll $3
- just as yum as you'd expect with fiery red pepper bits "Chicken of the Sea" Spicy Tuna Hand Roll $3
- vinegary sweet, a teensy bit rubbery, coulda really used the rice to soak up the sauce "Octo-Shrimp" Hand Roll $3
Temaki serves their fish fresh-to-order with prices that are very nice – considering their awesome quality – so don't be surprised if the wait takes a little extra time.
After snapping a pic of my meal, I thought "wow, all this food for $16 just for me – what a deal!"
Naturally, I went head first into the Yellowtail Toro. I'm usually not a huge Yellowtail fan, but make it a Toro cut and I'm good to go. It really is buttery soft 'n smooth with a spec of black pepper & salt (you can see it in the picture if you look real close) for gentle season.
The Spicy Salmon Hand Roll, I could've eaten 20 of. I love the mellow sweetness of the Salmon paired with the Spicy Red Pepper Sauce, then backed by the Sesame Seed crunch. Same goes for the Spicy Tuna, but it tastes more fresh than sweet and is cut in finer bits.
I do not recommend getting the Octo-Shrimp Hand Roll without Rice – not like it comes that way, mine was a special order – but the thick Vinegary almost too Sweet Sauce doesn't go down well without some Rice to soak it up.
I look forward to coming back soon for the Tokyo Shrimp with Masago Roll & 5-Piece Temaki Maki special, just as the sushi chef intended, with rice.
If there's one food truck you gotta try this New Year, make sure it's the Shrimp Pimp, 'cuz they serve super sexy 'n succulent shrimp (by the seashore too). Featured on Rachael Ray's Show this past Fall, the Shrimp Pimp holds it's own with everything from Po Boys to Shrimp Bruschetta. It quite possibly may be the best shrimp – even Haddock – you'll ever taste with portions & prices that make it a steal!
The Grubdown:
- the most succulent shrimp i've ever had, super plump 'n juicy Drunken Shrimp Taco marinated in Aromatic Sherry Ginger Sauce with Carrots, Jicama & Cilantro $1 for $3/2 for $5
- so freakin' tender you don't even need the tartar sauce, monster crunch 'n spice rubbed The Frylander Haddock Fish & Chips with Guinness Beer Batter and Homemade French Fries $8
Let me start off by saying I'm not a huge shrimp eater, unless it's served with Cocktail Sauce or wrapped in Coconut. After trying the Shrimp Truck for the first time, I'll never look at Shrimp the same.
After just our 1st bite of the Drunken Shrimp Taco, my hand model and I literally looked at each other and said, "Um, should we go back for more?!?"– it was THAT good. The brothy, sweet vinegary Shrimp mixed with the crunch of the julienne Jicama & Carrots and super fresh 'n spicy Cilantro makes for one mean taco.
As for Fish 'n Chips, being half British naturally makes me a connoisseur and, again, this was the best I've ever had. First of all, I'm pretty sure they serve an ENTIRE WHOLE Haddock because the size of the fish was massive – Shrimp Pimp definitely wasn't kidding when they said the meal was large. The Fish itself is so unbelievably tender, buttery, and juicy. The Golden Beer Batter delivers a serious monster crunch. And the Macleod family recipe Spice Rub makes this whole package so delicious, you'll literally forgot all about the Tartar Sauce that comes with it – we did.
In the Homemade French Fries, Black Pepper & Parsley steal the show.
After our meal, we would've gone back for more, except for the fact we were stuffed to the gills!
I'm already planning my Next Bite though, and you should too. Follow @ShrimpPimpTruck
Wednesday was cold 'n rainy, so naturally I had to warm the soul with my favorite cuisine of all – Indian – from the New Delhi Express Food Truck. I'd been waiting for it to launch for quite some time – ok fine, it was like 4 weeks, but 4 REALLY LONG ones – and while not everything I tried was as good as I hoped for, I did find a few new gems.
The Grubdown:
- thick 'n creamy, buttery, spicy but not enough tang Chicken Tikka Masala Meal with garlicky, pillowey Naan ($8)
- spicy and a little fatty Tandoori Chicken marinated overnight in Yogurt Masala ($2.50 each)
- really incredible, super tender 'n juicy, like frankincense & myrrh Kabob Roll with Rice, Special Homemade Sauce & Fresh Sliced Onions wrapped in Naan ($4)
As I said before, Indian food is one of my favorites, so I tend to be very picky.
Unfortunately, the Chicken Tikka Masala is not up to par. While it's creamy 'n buttery with some spice, there's not enough tangy, tomatoey Curry flavor to keep you wanting to go back for more – not to mention the Chicken is tough and overcooked. The Rice is tri-colored in white, yellow & orange, the Garlicky Naan is fluffy-to-die-for, and the minty Yogurt Sauce is more like Chilled Lemon Soup.
The Tandoori is tender, spicy, smokey, meaty, and a little fatty.
But, it's really the unexpected Kabob Roll that steals the Bollywood show. First of all, I had yet to see a Kabob on an Indian food truck's menu, so of course I had to try it. The same fluffy Naan from the Chicken Tikka Meal – so tender it falls apart in your hands – is used to wrap up the Frankincense & Myrrh, Cinnamon & Cardamom-spiced Meatball. The Meat is so juicy it equally falls apart too. And the crunch of the Sliced Onions help balance out the overall pillowey magic carpet ride in your mouth.
Definitely give the Kabob Roll a whirl. And the pyramid-shaped Samosas – kind of in the same shape as Ta Bom truck's Coxinha Croquette – look heavenly too.
Baby it's cold outside, so go warm yourself up with a hot cup of Pho from the Eat Phamish Vietnamese Food Truck. Just like the Soup Nazi on Seinfeld, the chef is equally as tough. When you order your Pho she'll demand to know if you're eating it right now or waiting for later to ensure her homemade broth from the night before doesn't wilt the fresh vegetable & sprout accompaniments.
I'm keepin' this one short and savory. While I loved all the mix of minty fresh and spicy Vietnamese flavors, to be honest the meats in both the Pho and Spring Rolls were tough. Not sure if Eat Phamish had an off day, or if the chef was trying to match the texture of her meats to her personality.
In the Pho, I loved the crunch of the Carrots & Sprouts, and the addition of Jalapeno is genius. Also you can tell the Noodles are homemade because they are all cut in different widths.
The Vietnamese Spring Rolls were surprisingly Minty fresh, which balanced the prominent Black Pepper spice.
And the Liquid Coconut Juice is only for the brave, a.k.a. hardcore coconut lovers.
Follow @EatPhamish if you're lucky enough to get "Soup for You!"
Oui Oui, you DO want the new La Rue de Paris French Food Truck! Everything is authentic, right down to the slow service. But at least you can watch the fresh, local, organic fare – from quiche to crepes – being cooked right before your eyes.
The Grubdown:
- light, fluffy 'n buttery La Superbe with Smoked Salmon, Goat Cheese, Capers, Tomato, Fresh Basil & Pesto ($8)
- super filling, thinly sliced, a little greasy Le Voila with Rosemary Ham, Cappocollo, Martadella, Havarti Cheese, Fresh Basil, Pesto & Mayo ($7)
While taking a delightful stroll down Miracle Mile, my hand model, friend, and I happened upon brand new food truck, La Rue. To my surprise I went for majority rule, and passed on my most favorite dish of all – Quiche – and decided to split the Panini and Savory Crepe.
And I'm glad I did because La Superbe is Le Fabuleux! The Crepe is probably the fluffiest I've ever had, almost like air – but not that boring Celery kind of air – rather buttery, savory warm goodness. And while it may not look like the chef puts enough Smoked Salmon in your Crepe, it actually turns out to be plenty combined with the Crunchy Red Onion, Capers & Creamy Pesto Dijon.
The boys both chose Le Voila Panini, so of course I had to have my share. The Panini is perfectly pressed with a nice crunch. The Meats are seductively sliced thin. But between the Cheeses & Pesto Mayo, there's a little too much grease and not enough acid – a.k.a you might find yourself dipping the sandwich in the Mixed Green Salad's Dressing it comes with.
Also, Le Voila Panini is so filling, I couldn't even finish my half. Yet somehow, at the end of the meal, I found myself longing for another bite of La Superbe because, well, the name says it all.
Next time I'll definitely be indulging in the Quiche du Jour ($8), a Double Espresso ($3), Pain Au Chocolate, or La Manage a Trois Sweet Crepe with Nutella, Strawberry, Banana, Powdered Sugar & Whipped Cream ($8).

Last Wednesday, a.k.a. "Getaway Day", when the winds were blowin' and the roads were crawling, fate was intervening when I spotted the Patty Wagon Food Truck on the way to the 101 freeway. I had been waiting soooooo long to try this truck, that I didn't have a care in the world I was about to stuff myself proper – after a 5 mile run of course – the very next Thanksgiving Day.
The Grubdown:
- one of the tender 'n juiciest beef patties you'll ever have, sans any chewy bits of course, Mini Classic Burger with Cheddar, Crisp Romaine & Vine-Ripened Tomato ($2.75 ea)
- gourmet style, savory, oniony 'n tart Mini Shine On Harvest Moon Burger with Warm Bacon, Leeks, Cabbage, Pink Lady Apple Slice, Havarti Cheese & Mayo ($3.75)
- my new favorite type of fry, cut Mandoline-style Original Sea Salt & Rosemary Garlic Fries ($3 ea)
The atmosphere Patty Wagon provides is so pleasant with classic '40s music pumping, I even chose to brave eating outside on their cute sunflower-topped ironing board, in the shade, with gusty winds, frigid temperatures (for LA), no proper coat, and blue fingers.
Patty Wagon stands by their "pre-food chain" motto. Their Grass-fed, low-fat, hormone-free, omega-three Beef is from cows exclusively pasture-raised in Teton Valley, Idaho. Their Buns are bought from a local LA "Valley" baker. Their hand-cut fries are made from locally grown Potatoes. And their accompaniments like Tomatoes & Leeks are from various local farmers, listed specifically on the truck's weekly menu.
From the first bite to the last bite of The Classic, I can honestly say I've never had a purer burger with Meat so clean, fresh, and fatty free. Your teeth will sink first into the buttery, crispy-edged Bun, then directly through the tender, juicy meat.
The Shine On Harvest Burger special was a must-order, 'cuz I love anything with Leeks. It's savory 'n sweet with a caramelized oniony flavor, thin Pink Lady Apple slice, smokey Havarti Cheese & Bacon – the hand model and I fought like children over it.
And the Fries – To Die. Forget the Shoestring, these Mandoline-cut Potatoes are thin almost like they're shaved. They're crisp on the outside, yet still fluffy on the inside. And either flavors – Original or Rosemary (explosion) Garlic – will tempt you to order 4 more.
I seriously cannot wait to go back!
Follow @PattyWagonLA for Your Next Bite. Tomorrow for lunch they'll be in DTLA on 9th & Hope near FIDM.
It's the day after Thanksgiving. I know, you're still stuffed. Which is why I'm bringing you a caffeinated beverage to help get you moving along from Trytophan to Tapioca Tea.
Introducing the Boba Truck. If you haven't heard of Boba before, it's a specialty Taiwanese drink. Sometimes referred to as Bubble or Tapioca Pearls, they basically taste like rounded honey gummy bears. Not sure if any nutritional value is associated with them, but the drink as a whole is fun to sip (and chew).
The Grubdown:
- you can really taste the floral 'n earl grey notes, milky smooth Cherry Blossom Premium Milk Tea ($4)
I must admit, the Boba Truck was my first sampling of a Boba Tea. To be honest, the thought of gummy Tapioca Balls shooting up a straw while I'm trying to swallow tea kinda frightened me. (Does it come with the heimlich? Afraid not.) But after jumping over the hurdle, it actually turned out to be a unique experience with incredibly flavored tea too – tapioca ball or not.
Now Earl Grey is my favorite tea, so I was disappointed they were out of it when it was time to order. But they had such a great mix of other exotic teas – Japan Barley Green, French Rose Black, Fuji Apple Black, Taro Milk, Pomegranate, and more ($3.50-4) – that I was excited to try something new.
After the server showed me all the bottled tea leave options, she recommended her personal favorite, Cherry Blossom Milk. It blew my mind way more than I thought it would. I'm not such a huge lover of floral teas like Jasmine and Lavender because they impart a bitterness too much like drinkable perfume. But this Cherry Blossom was anything but. It was sweet in all the right places, yet balanced with my favorite Oil of Bergamot essence found in Earl Grey tea. And the black Tapioca Pearls had a faint Kahlua, Coffee-like flavor on top of sweet Honey Maple.
Happy Black / Food Truck Friday biters!– now go order one short 'n sweet. Follow @thebobatruck to track 'em down.
The Food Truck that started it all (as in the need for Your Next Bite Food Truck Friday), Kogi BBQ is celebrating it's 2nd year anniversary this coming Wednesday November 24th (the day before Thanksgiving). While last year was filled with pinatas and food competitions (as if stuffing your face before Turkey Day wasn't enough), this year there'll be 2 for $2 taco specials (excluding calamari, limit 2 tacos per person).
- sweet barbeque meat, soy caramelized glaze, soft pillowy bun Kogi Short Rib chunky Sliders with Shredded Monterey Jack & Cheddar Cheese and Green Onions ($5)
- cool cabbage crunch, traditional korean bbq flavor Short Rib Tacos with Cilantro ($2)
- super impressively tender, hot sriracha sauce tasting Calamari Tacos ($2)
It's hard to believe that Your Next Bite has taken this long to blog about the one and only, original food truck that started my gourmet street food love, and probably yours too. There are several reasons why Kogi is on my top 3 (others are the Grilled Cheese Truck & Baby's Badass Burgers) food truck list: 1. Kimchi Quesadilla that no one else can beat 2.) loyalty to Miracle Mile 3.) they're the OG, RESPECT!
I've seriously eaten Kogi a thousand times, so I thought it'd be appropriate to blog about my favorites, plus a new special. Forks down, my favorite is their Kimchi Quesadilla. I mean, besides cheese & chocolate, what could be a better indulgent combination than a greasy quesadilla with spicy Kimchi Cabbage that's good for your digestion too – it's like my yoga instructor channeled me into trying this new vegetarian obsession. It's crunchy, it's spicy, it's cheesy, it's greasy, it's big enough for two, and it's good for your digestive health – need I say more?
My 2nd must-order is the Short Rib Sliders. First of all, their pillowy buns melt in your mouth. Coupled with the sweet Korean BBQ flavored meat, Shredded Cheese, pungent Green Onion, and new charcoal grill marks on top, it's like a Kings Hawaiian Luau on your tongue.
3rd – you really can't go to Kogi without ordering their Short Rib Tacos. It's their signature and when you taste it, you'll realize why every other korean food truck tries to replicate it but fails. It's true Mexican-meets-Korean with spicy Cilantro, fresh chopped Cabbage and Onion, and no extra Lime necessary. Just order it. You'll taste what I'm talking about.
Finally, I tried the new Calamari Tacos. The hand model and I were pleasantly surprised by the juxtaposition of the tender Calamari and fiery, spicy Sweet Chili/Sriracha finish. This one will sneakily clear your sinuses, so get your napkin ready.
Follow @kogibbq on twitter for updates on their 2nd birthday celebration locations and specials.
With the year's longest all-night candy-fest over – a.k.a. Halloween – it's time to flush out those sugar toxins with the Greenz on Wheelz food truck, "the only salad truck in town." With 10 kinds of Salads, 5 Melts, and 8 "Dirty" Potato Chips, you know this truck has been a long time comin' – same with your "been meaning to eat better" mantra.
The Grubdown:
- ridiculously large, well-oiled, light on the vinaigrette Veggie Salad with Tomato, Cucumber, Carrots, Avocado, Red Onion, Mushrooms, Bell Pepper, Black Olive, Garbanzo Beans, Guacamole + Chicken ($9)
- pungent 'n sweet All Natural "Maui Onion" Dirty Potato Chips ($1.50)
Before you know it, those holiday pounds are gonna start racking up. You've really only got two choices in this situation: A.) Start training for a 5k, 10k, or marathon and risk getting injured so you end up even bigger, or B.) Start mixing in a salad every now and then.
I choose B. I also choose Veggie Salads then add proteins like Chicken – does that make me a hypocrite, or just a healthier carnivore? You decide.
First off, this thing is ginormous, as in heavy, like I could be doing bicep curls with it. So don't even think about eating it unless you've got a person or two to split it with – 'cuz we all know there's no saving dressed salads. It's a little disappointing that leafy Mixed Greens don't come with the Veggie Salad, rather Romaine & Iceburg. But the Peppers and Garbanzo Beans up the fiber intake. The Mushrooms are bland, but the Chicken is tender with grilled char flavor. And the mound of Guacamole it comes with is always pleasing. (Bite Advice: shake it around before it's gone in 60 seconds.) I do have to say the Dressing is more on the oily side, so you might want to have at the condiment section yourself (see 3rd picture).
I am excited to return and try one of their 7 other salads like the "Mixed Greenz" with Apple, Blue Cheese & Walnut ($8), or the "Italian" with Mortadela, Prosciutto & Pepperoncini ($8). It's gonna be hard to steer clear of the carbs – Parmesan Butter Rubbed Sourdough Melts like the Roast Beef with Ortega Chili, Cheese & BBQ Sauce. Oh and let's not forget about the 8 different kinds of All Natural – hey that's good for me right?!? – Potato Chips like Smoky Chipotle & Sour Cream and Onion ($1.50)
If you have any intention of fitting into your favorite black skinny jeans this holiday season, then RUN, don't just follow @GreenzOnWheelz.
P.S. The 2nd food picture is the "After" shot, as in look how much salad was left over after I got full – you can't even tell, so please share!
The Sugar Babies Food Truck brings your favorite cupcake dessert to you in 3-bite size, depending on how big or small your mouth is. From their mini truck to their mini "reasonably-portioned" & creatively adorned sweets, co-owners and sisters Kassandra & Rachel can cater your next event, whether you eat vegan or vats of sugar, plus the Coffee, Tea & Milk – you'll be needing some to avoid any awkward Peanut Butter Aaron Burr moments.
The Grubdown:
- creamy, decadent, i wanted 3 more mini "Nutty Butter" Cupcake with Semi-Sweet Chocolate Cake, Peanut Butter Cream Cheese Frosting & Peanut Butter Filling ($1.25)
I don't know about you, but with Halloween right around the corner, those spooky Reese's Peanut Butter Cup commercials have really been freaking my diet out. Thankfully I spotted my friend Blaise on the Miracle Mile at lunch time, holding the cutest mini cupcake I ever did see topped with none other than half a mini Reese's Peanut Butter Cup. I couldn't say no.
The Frosting is creamy – not too thick, sweet, or salty – and invites you to keep on biting. The Chocolate Cake is a teensy bit dry. And the Peanut Butter surprise inside makes you wish you bought that $2 glass of milk, or that you didn't inhale it in 3 seconds flat (like I did).
Overall, the "Nutty Butter" Cupcake totally satiated my Peanut Butter Cup craving – enough so that hopefully I won't be fighting kids tooth 'n nail over the Halloween candy bowl.
Other flavors include "Breakfast at Tiffany's" with Blue Vanilla Sweet Buttercream Frosting & Silver Candied Pearls, "Easy as Pie" with Graham Infused Cake & Lime Cream Cheese Frosting, "Crem de la Crem" with Vanilla Cake, Vanilla Custard Filling & Semi-Sweet Chocolate Ganache and 8 more.
Get your trick "Vegan Carrot Cake" or treat on @Sugar_Babies.
It was a cold, rainy day on Wednesday – you know, my favorite kind of LA day because it breaks up the sunny monotony – and what better way to warm my heart & tummy than with portable Indian comfort food from the Dosa Truck.
The Grubdown:
- The Combo with so-sinful-you-forget-it's-vegetarian Slumdog Dosa, Fennel Seed speckled Samosa, and bitter Ginger Limeade ($10 + $1 tax = $11)
Indian food is probably my most favorite cuisine ever because the spices and flavors are so incredible and unique. It's like a party in my mouth every time. So when I came across the Dosa Truck – which, by the way, I've been dying to try for months – I couldn't have been more delighted. I will admit, as an omnivore, their menu is pretty skimpy. So I had to go with the most bang for my buck and order The Combo with the Slumdog.
The best way to describe this Dosa is like a French Crepe meets a Mexican Quesadilla meets Indian ingredients. The Dosa (dough) is fluffy and w/holy. The first bite is enlightening with a great balance of tangy Paneer (cheese), acidic Tomato, mushy Yellow Curry Potato, and green "Indian" Pesto. It's got just the right amount of grease to warm your insides, and enough crispy edges to keep your figure in check.
The Samosa is super moist and pretty standard with Yellow Curry, Peas, Potatoes & a refreshing sprinkling of Fennel Seeds. As for the two Dipping Sauces it's served with, the Green one is spicy and Cucumber Melon fresh. The dark Tamarind Sauce is smoky, but too Honey-like sweet. I recommend dipping in both to cut the thickness.
The only thing I was disappointed with was the bitterness of the Ginger Limeade. I happen to love all things Ginger, but this drink was a little too potent and sour.
For more sweet Slumdog success follow @dosatruck in Downtown LA for lunch tomorrow from 11:30am-2:30pm at 919 South Grand Ave. (FIDM).
P.S. the Brooklyn boy from Jersey behind the counter is totally sincere and will ensure your order is just how you please. Let's keep the faith! (sorry, inside joke between us).
I mean the headline really says it all – all of the juicy benefits of one great hot dog from The Greasy Wiener food truck, that is. Served up by 3 wise guys from New Jersey – wise as in innovative – Adam, Josh & Eric have married food with film. They take upcoming artists, musicians, comedians, etc. on the road with a camera crew, then broadcast interactive multi-media performances. Check out Monday's video of reality-star Tristan from YouControl TV (brought to you by producer Seth Green of the Family Guy).
Now on to the goods...
The Grubdown:
- crunchy, salty, tough 'n juicy The Original All Beef Greasy Wiener with Sauerkraut, Sauteed Onions, Pickle Slice & Mustard $4
First of all, I love the easy to go package the dog perfectly slides in – it's not too big, it's not too small, but fits just right.
Secondly, the long Pickle Wedge is genius. Who wants the mess of Relish when you can have a nice compact Pickle Wedge to eat on or off your dog?
Besides the Pickle, there's still a whole lot of crunch going on with the mound of toppings – these guys really make you work for it. The Sauerkraut is salty, peppery, and vinegary. The Onions add some bite, while the Mustard adds some spice. And the All-Beef Hot Dog is thick-skinned, but once you get in, the juices release, and well, you get the idea.
Altogether it's kind of addicting. I'm sure you'll be shoving that dog down your face faster than you can say Uncle.
They also serve Vegan "Hippy" Hot Dogs ($4), Bacon-wrapped Chili Cheese Bombs, Chicken Apple Sausage Specials ($6), Fries ($2), and "Iggys" ($5) or mini sliders.
Follow @TheGreasyWiener for Your Next Bite. Today, they'll be rolling on the Miracle Mile from 11am-3pm.
To warm my soul from Wednesday's cold rainy day, I decided to revisit the Dim Sum Truck. My first Grubdown was on their dumplings at the LA Street Food Fest, so this time I tried some new items of course.
The Grubdown:
- sticky, dry, needs more sauce 'n meat Steamed BBQ Pork Buns (2 for $3.25)
- earthy, tangy 'n sticky in a good way Lotus Leaf-wrapped Sticky Rice with Chicken, Pork, Sausage, Shrimp & Mushroom ($3.25)
Happy Food Truck Friday biters. I'm gonna start this one off by gettin' real. I was not impressed by Dim Sum's Steamed BBQ Pork Buns – nor was my dehydrated tongue. While the meat inside was tasty with great Sweet BBQ flavor, there was not enough and it had too much fluff.
As for the Sticky Rice, don't even think about eating the Lotus Leaf – that's strictly for presentation purposes. But once you unravel it or poke around inside, the rice is gooey with a smokey, sweet, savory sauce. The Mushrooms are meaty, the Sausage is sweet, but the promised Shrimp & Chicken were nowhere in sight. (Perhaps they were trying to stay dry by keeping cover in the truck.)
I hope next time I return, the Dim Sum will get a little more saucey with me.
Tomorrow they'll be downtown at FIDM on 9th and Hope. Follow them on Twitter @dimsumtruck.
A Rabbi, a Latke, and a Brisket walk into a Taco Truck and Takosher, "The Chosen Taco" is born, baptized, then circumcised...
Just when you thought there was nothing more to love than the juxtaposition of high quality ingredients from a rolling street vendor, Takosher swoops in and breaks a delicious dish in your drooling face...
Ok, ok, I'll stop with the 1 liners, but I gotta say, the fact that the jewish-mexican fusion food has been certified "ritually pure" by Rabbi Kelemer, makes me wanna scream "holy guacamole!" (Did this last one make you wanna say "Ole" or "Oy Vey"?).
- rivaling Kogi, so sweet 'n tender The Original Brisketaco with Chili Sauce, Sauerkraut & Raisins ($3.50)
- sweet fried bliss The Original Latketaco with 3 Types of Potatoes, Cilantro, Onions & Spicy Apple Jalapeno Chutney ($3.50)
- refreshing, zesty Jicama Salad with Chopped Carrots & Cucumber (2 taco combo + chips + salad for $6.50)
When I asked the truck server how big the tacos were and he answered 1.5 to 2 inches, he wasn't kidding. Good thing my hand model was MIA for the day, 'cuz there was NO WAY I was sharing these avante-garde taco treats.
First of all, Brisket in a Taco? So simple, yet so genius. (My Jewish friend Jackie who dies for Mexican food is probably super jealous she left LA.) The meat tastes like sweet smokey BBQ and the Diced Onions give it a sharp bite, while the Sauerkraut & Cilantro give it some tang.
The Latke Taco is surprising – perfectly crispy & crunchy on the outside, fluffy & soft on the inside. And right when you dive in, the Cinnamon in the finely chopped Apple Jalapeno Chutney leaps at your nose.
The Jicama Salad must be scooped up with the Tortilla Chips. Bite advice – add some Lime. But on it's own, it's cooling with a touch of vinegar, and balances the sweet flavors of the 2 tacos well.
Tomorrow & Saturday, Takosher will not be rolling as they're closed in observance of Simchat Torah & Shabbat. But they'll be open on Sunday from 11am - 6pm for the Jewish County Fair at the Shalom Institute off Mulholland. Follow the truck @Takosher on Twitter for details.
(I thought I'd spare you by not making another joke and finish on a L'Chayim note ;)
Fishlips Food Truck has been rollin' out sushi on the street for over a year now. While their rolls & Temari (ball-shaped Kyoto-style sushi) are simply divine, their multiple menus are a bit much. My advice – stick to the pictures.
The Grubdown:
- just the right size, Spicy Small Set with 4 fire 'n ice Spicy Tuna Rolls, 3 lemon buttery Salmon Temari, and 2 sweetly charred Unagi Temari ($6.95)
If you've been hesitant about trying fresh fish from a truck, fear no more. You can actually watch the sushi chefs prepare your food right in front of your eyes through the large glass window after you order.
Speaking of eyes, mine were kind of hurting after reading their overwhelming 5+ menus, so I decided to just succumb to the pictures – writer, fail. I chose the Spicy Small Set which is just enough for one person, but you might leave still curious about that yummy sounding Crunchy Hand Roll ($3.50).
The Spicy Tuna Rolls are, as Katy Perry says,"Hot and Cold" with spicy seasoning, fresh 'n cool Cucumber, and creamy Avocado. The toasted Sesame Seeds give it a nice crunch, too.
The thin Lemon Wedges on the Salmon Temari add a surprising zest & bitterness from the rind that'll change your usual sushi salmon order forever, and the fish has a sweet buttery soft texture.
As for the Unagi (Eel), it has a great balance of sweet & char, but the sushi chefs really need to beef up the cut of the filet – a.k.a. I wanted more.
And last but not least, the rice is extremely light 'n fluffy, so be careful 'cuz it falls apart easily.
Overall, the quality of the fish is fantastic, and the value is huge for the small price.
Follow @Fishlips_Sushi for their next truck stop, or to cater your next party.
Just in case you missed the Just Desserts Food Truck on Wednesday, September 15th – officially named "Top Chef Just Desserts Day" in honor of the Bravo TV show premiere – here's the proverbial Grubdown of the FREE tasty treats served at select trucks and locations around the nation.
The Grubdown:
- uber thick, perhaps a bit too much jam Strawberry Tarte Godiva Truffle with White Chocolate Cream
- i wanted to eat 5 of these to equal a whole slice Carrot Cake Godiva Truffles with Real Carrot Cake inside, Brown Sugar Crunch & Chopped Walnuts
- sweet peach flavor, but i wish it had some cookie crumble Peach Cobbler Breyers Ice Cream
- yummy, but i prefer actual chips to the thin chocolate rectangles Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Breyers Ice Cream
- the thickest, cream cheesiest I've ever had Red Velvet Cupcake
- banana flavor stands out, savory bacon saves the day in this too-much-goin-on Peanut Butter Bacon Cupcake with Banana Nut Frosting
- bursting with cinnamon you can smell from a distance, really soft 'n buttery Oatmeal Raisin DeLuscious Cookie
- forget the chips, this one comes with chocolate slabs, soft 'n chewy Chocolate Chip DeLuscious Cookie
I was quite surprised at the Just Desserts Truck's generosity. Each person got a Cupcake, a Cookie, an Ice Cream, and a Truffle while they waited in the long line. The portions of the Ice Cream and Cookies were rather small, but the size of the Cupcakes certainly made up for it. Out of the two flavors both were kind of off. The Red Velvet's Cream Cheese Frosting was bordering on too thick 'n savory, and while I appreciated the crazy creativity of the Peanut Butter Bacon Banana Cupcake, it was way too sugar and I immediately needed a lemonade after the first bite.
Even though the cookies were small and thin like air, they were still everything you hope for – soft, buttery & chewy. I was really impressed by the fragrant Cinnamon in the Oatmeal Raisin and will definitely be tracking DeLuscious down for some more. And the Chocolate more like "Slab" Cookie was so chocolatey, the dough barely covered it – but hey I ain't complaining.
The Chocolate "Rectangles" in the Cookie Dough Breyers Ice Cream reminded me of those you find in the Mint Chocolate Chip flavor, so unfortunately that's all I could taste. The Peach was divine, but could have been better with some Cobbler Crumble.
And out of the Godiva Bakery Dessert Truffles, the Carrot Cake was definitely the best, since the Strawberry was too gooey.
If you were lucky enough to catch the Just Desserts Food Truck on Wednesday and are now watching the show, you'll probably recognize L.A. pastry chef Danielle Keene who was serving the free desserts from inside. No word on whether they'll be returning to the streets anytime soon. So for now, follow the host of the show @GailSimmons as well as @BravoTopChef and @BravoTV for updates.
When I first heard of the Tasty Meat Food Truck I never once thought it would be serving Turkish food. Instead, I pictured spinning whole roasted chickens, bbq ribs, hamburgers and hot dogs. For the first time I was happy I was wrong.
The Grubdown:
- truly tasty, juicy mix of ground Beef, Lamb & Falafel The Bamwich!!! topped with Romaine, Roma Tomato, Red Onion, Tzatziki, Feta & Tahini Sauces (8" $6, 12" $8)
- almost tastes like chili minus the beef, pungent tangy Feta Fries with Red Feta Spread & Tzatziki ($4)
- soft 'n fluffy, nothin' really special Grilled Cheese Pocketless Pita with Jack & Cheddar ($3)
If you're gonna order 1 thing at Tasty Meat, go big with The Bamwich!!! It really is all that with big flavor from the unbelievably juicy Beef & Lamb. The meat is creatively ground up with an actual Falafel – which you could probably eat by itself, or atop a salad for a healthier mix. It also has big bite from the crisp Red Onion, and is creamy 'n cheesy from the 3 different sauces. My hand model and I split it along with the Fries and Grilled Cheese – but I'm not gonna lie I definitely wanted more than just half, so order one for yourself.
Ok fine, you gotta try the Feta Fries too. If you like Paprika and Red Peppery Spice, then you'll love these. Mixed with Tzatziki, Feta & Red Onion, the combination imparts a chili-like flavor that's addicting. I just wish the Fries were thicker and softer, since they were kinda dry.
As for the Grilled Cheese, it's not anything spectacular, but it is buttery, soft and fluffy which adds extra bonus points in my cookbook.
To get down with the tasty Turkish grub, follow the truck on Twitter @TastyMeat.
If you read Wednesday's blog post on how I spent last week Eating the Ocean State, and have been wondering why my favorite Del's Lemonade was not included, it's because I've been saving & savoring it for this very moment – Food Truck Friday.
Just as I described in last week's Del's Lemonade LA Food Truck post, it seriously is a real treat (pun intended) that my favorite Italian Ice from Rhode Island graced my presence with 15 years later in LA – and in the form of a Food Truck, no less.
So, today I bring you the ORIGINAL, I'm talking the first Del's Lemonade STAND & even HEADQUARTERS straight outta Cranston, Rhode Island.
The Grubdown:
- as delicious as ever, perfectly balanced lemon & sugar, smaller ice crystals, and cheaper too The Original Del's Frozen Lemonade ($1.65 Small)
I was so happy to be reunited with my long lost, then found in LA, love. It was a short stop, the very nature of the stand, and honestly between trying to fit in all my other Rhode Island favorites from 10 years ago, the size Small was just right – and almost half the price of LA's too. The Ice Crystals seemed finer and easier to chug, and the Frozen Lemon Rinds were just as blissful as on the West Coast.
Unlike LA's 3 locations, the original stand in Cranston, RI sells more than Lemonade & Italian Ice. To eat they've got your typical childhood Candy Treasure Trove like Blow Pops, Ring Pops, Fire Balls & Airheads ($0.10-0.75), as well as Fair-Friendly Food like Caramel Corn & Cotton Candy ($1.50-2). More substantial Stadium Cravings include Pretzel Rods, Hot Dogs & Nachos ($0.15-3.75).
What's super ice cool is that they sell their own Mix, so you can take it home and make your own ($9.95 Quart, $16 1/2 Gallon, $25 Gallon).
The service is as friendly as always with a "wicked auuwwwesome" Rhode Island accent that makes me giggle every time. Yet oddly enough, I was actually surprised & delighted to see a Del's Lemonade Truck at 1st beach in Newport, RI, which I'd never seen before. It actually made me feel at home.
P.S. It took every fiber of my being to not break into the Del's Headquarters and learn their secret recipe. It's Froh-so-good!
Nothing tastes better when the sun's blazing on than Great Grandfather DeLucio's Del's Frozen Lemonade Italian fruit ice recipe dating back to 1840 Naples, Italy. I was first introduced to Del's in my childhood, when I visited my mom's side of the family in Rhode Island. The summers there can be brutally hot and humid, so the little Del's Frozen Lemonade stand in Cranston always hit the spot.
Eventually I looked forward to going back each summer, just so I could have another taste of the fun frozen treat – let's not forget about The Black Pearl's Clam Chowder, Dunkin' Donuts, Newport Creamery Butter Brickle Ice Cream, Twin Oaks Italian Restaurant, and Quahogs too. (Reviews on all to come soon!) What can I say? Everywhere I go my Food Fetish follows.
When Del's opened their first store in L.A., you can imagine the size of the smile that immediately lit up my face. And to top that off, a Food Truck too?!? Inner. Harmony. Reached.
The Grubdown:
- zesty, citrusy, real natural lemon flavor + frozen lemon rind bonus The Original Frozen Lemonade ($2.50 Medium)
- tropical, fuzzy, a little more sweet 'n syrupy Peach-Mango Italian Ice ($2.50 Medium)
Walking up to the Del's Truck, I couldn't help but smile seeing server Brett in his Boston Red Sox cap. Immediately I felt at home as his accent and die-hard Sox fan cap reminded me of my cousin Benj, a.k.a. Ben Hague, Comedian and TV Show Host for Fox Providence's The Rhode Show.
I ordered the Original Lemonade, naturally, and was surprised to see a whole new world of flavors that Cranston's little roadside stand never had before. Watermelon was sounding good, but Brett recommended his favorite, Peach-Mango.
The Original is outstanding. It's got crisp, clean, natural lemon flavors. It's fresh, zesty, and not too sweet. And the best part is the Frozen Sugared little jewels of Lemon Rind you find folded inside – I'd eat a whole bucket of it, if it weren't for the freeze brain.
I was really amazed at how fantastic the Peach-Mango tasted too and will definitely be adding it to my regular roster – thanks Brett! While it's sweeter than the Original with more of an Italian Syrup taste, it's tropical, yet tangy, and I just couldn't get enough.
Follow the Truck @DelsLA or visit them at one of their 3 California stores:
- Venice: 701 Lincoln Blvd., Venice, CA 90291
- Silverlake: 3926 West Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90028
- Alta Loma: 5726 Napa Court, Alta Loma, CA 91701
P.S. Stay tuned for an update from the original stand in Cranston, RI!
Top Chef Season One contestant & Private Chef of Beverly Hills, Brian Hill, sure knows how to dish out some delish 24-hr marinated Golden Fried Chicken Tenders from his Comfort Truck. They're so tender and juicy, I wish I could let those tough, NON-Hawaiian Sliders slide.
The Grubdown:
- glistening, drippingly juicy Golden Fried Chicken Tenders (5 for $5)
- tangy, smooth 'n thin BBQ Sauce
- lots of heat Hot Sauce
- the best part is the Roasted Garlic Aioli, can't even taste the pineapple Hawaiian Beef Sliders (2 for $4)
I was excited to finally get out of my Miracle Mile Food Truck comfort zone and follow @ComfortTruck to West LA for the day. Described as "Mary J Blige's Favorite", I couldn't resist splitting The Golden Fried Chicken Tenders with my hand model, as well as the new featured Hawaiian Beef Sliders.
The Chicken Tenders are a MUST ORDER. First of all, you get 5 large and in charge, plump pieces. Second of all, these babies will be the softest, tenderest, juiciest Tenders you ever had. The Batter is light and doesn't have that heavy fake crunch, but rather gentle crisp in all the right places. You can taste some Black Pepper too, but I wish they used a little more Salt. And the Chicken really does glisten inside with all the juices flowing (soon to be down your chin).
The Tenders also come with complimentary BBQ or Hot Sauce – I, of course, asked for one of each. I really liked the tangy, not too sweet BBQ Sauce because it's thin, not thick. As for the Hot Sauce, all you can really taste is heat.
The Sliders, on the other hand, really were a disappointment. After reading the following tweet that day...
...I was expecting a Burger with the same sweet, juiciness of a Luau Pulled Pork Sandwich, rubbed with Hawaiian Coffee, then mounted by Big Kahuna Chunks of Pineapple. However, upon saying Aloha to the burger with my freshly Leid mouth, no "Culinary Trip" to Hawaii was in flight. I actually walked the Burger back to the truck thinking they had mistakenly given me a different Slider, but this was not the (suit)case. So after re-entering the supposed Hawaiian Atmosphere, I found a mere 2 or 3 tiny bits of pineapple, some fatty turbulence, day old bread, then finally a successful Roasted Garlic Aioli landing. I'm not sure if the heat of the burger made the Aioli run so thin, but I actually quite enjoyed its saucey, drippy consistency and wished there was more to dip.
So next time you're free to move about the Comfort Truck, save yourself some packing and stick to the Golden Fried Chicken Tender 'n juicy ride!
Two-month-old Krazy BBQ Food Truck really is krazy good, successfully executing Mexican & Korean BBQ fusion food – especially the Taquitos.
The Grubdown:
- phe-nom-e-nal, i want more now, tangy spicy sweet Krazy Beef Taquitos with Guacamole Sauce, KB Salsa & Lettuce ($5)
- tender, juicy, sweet KBBQ glaze shines thru Korean Pork Taco with KB Salsa, Cilantro, Onions & Cabbage ($2)
- the dressing is the best part, limp Iceberg Krazy Chicken Salad with Sliced Carrots, Tomato, Peperoncini & KB Ginger Sauce ($5)
Wow. Just when you think you can't handle another Korean BBQ food truck, Krazy BBQ comes in and sweeps you away with true Mexican-Korean BBQ fusion, way beyond the tortilla.
The ridiculously, krazy good Beef Taquitos (total of 5) definitely washed away my hand model and I's disappointment over the sold-out Short Ribs – and we totally fought over the last one too. The amount of ingredients and flavors going on magically all work together in a superfluous way you could never even imagine – Shredded Monterey Jack & Cheddar, Guacamole Cream Sauce, KB Salsa, Long Stringy Shredded Red Cabbage, Lettuce, Korean BBQ Sweet Sauce & Marinated Bulgogi Beef. You'll be schlopping up every last bite of toppings, trust me.
The Pork Taco is sweeter and spicier with a thicker Korean BBQ glaze, but still maintains the Mexi-Que fusion with fresh Chopped White Onion, Cilantro, and Cabbage. You can tell the chunky Pork is marinated because it's really juicy, and the Tortilla is deliciously fluffy. We also dipped the Taco in the Super Fiery Spicy Kimchee Sauce to balance out some of the sweet.
The most disappointing part is the Chicken Salad. I thought I was doing ourselves a favor by ordering something healthy, but had I known it would be all limp Iceberg Lettuce, I never would have ordered it. And to top it off, the Chicken isn't even good, but rather very fatty. I will say the Ginger Sauce Dressing is refreshing though.
Conclusion – stick to the Taquitos (do not share, you will want more) & the Tacos.
Krazy BBQ also serve Burritos ($6), Polish Sausage Hot Dogs ($5), Sandwiches ($6), Rice Plates ($6-8), and wacky Walnut & Peanut Dessert Balls (Small $2.50, Large $4).
Follow them @krazybbq for lunch today between Wilshire & Fairfax from 11am-3pm, and Sawtelle & Olympic from 11am-8pm.
Or, visit them at the OC Foodie Fest, Saturday August 28th at the Anaheim Honda Center from 11:30am-7pm.
The Surfer Taco Truck will take your tongue for a wild ride with unexpected killer spice in their big beefy Burritos and creamy, cool Fish Tacos – and yes they've got Lengua (Beef Tongue) too. While they won't be ridin' the 405 free-wave down to the 2010 U.S. Surf Open this weekend in HB, you can catch them paddling around Downtown LA.
- Cajun-spiced 'n very nice Fish Tacos with Cabbage, Chopped Tomato & Creamy Chipotle Sauce
- like fizzy iced tea with a sweet 'n sour kick Jarritos Tamarind Natural Soda
- watery Verde Sauce
- killer, it'll make you're teeth hurt Roja Sauce
Happy Food Truck Friday! I was super stoked to see a new truck in my hood, so I couldn't deny a try. My hand model and I, as always, split the following:
The Carne Asada Burrito – it's massive and comes neatly wrapped in a nicely toasted Flour Tortilla. Inside are the works – if you so choose – Pinto Beans, Shredduce (Shredded Lettuce), Rice, Salsa, Cilantro, and tender Carne Asada. Other than the few teensy fatty pieces found, the meat is really flavorful, unexpectly firey, and will make you say COWabunga (sorry, had to sprinkle in some cheese). The best part is the last bite, where all the juices come together then explode in your mouth.
The Fish Tacos – there's a generous whole Filet of Fish with some Cajun flavors goin' on and a spicy flare. My fish was perfectly tender, while my hand model said his was a little dry. But we both enjoyed the thickly sliced Cabbage, Chopped Tomato, and especially the Creamy Chipotle Sauce, which should be served on the side for extra dipping (or slathering).
In the truck's bucket are two squeezy tubes – one has Verde Sauce, which is way too watered down and not even worth it, and the other contains Roja Sauce which is so spicy, it seriously sent shivers up my lips and through my teeth.
The Tamarind Soda – it's such a treat, like a carbonated Arnold Palmer (Half Ice Tea, Half Lemonade) with a hint of nutty spice.
The Surfer Taco Truck uses real fresh Mexican ingredients – no lard & no cans. And they've actually been serving LA Tortas, Empanadas, Quesadillas, Camarones, Breakfast Burritos & more for several years now – they just probably upped their marketing ante with a new truck wrap and twitter page (@TheSurferTaco). They're available for Catering too at 213-265-5403.
If you're a food truck fanatic, the LA Street Food Fest is the place to be. At this year's sold-out 2nd Annual Summer Tasting Event – served up by saucey Shawna Dawson & Sonja Rasula – $45 bought you bites from over 60 Food Trucks AND unlimited free drinks from Singha Beer, 14 different tequilas, and Sailor Jerry Rum.
Simmer that with an Ice Cream Social, mini Unique LA marketplace, DJ, and live concert and you've got 1 meal ticket that's totally fulfilling – and the extra $20 tip for the VIP ticket ($65) let you bypass the 5,000 General Admission crowd for an Amouse-bouche Preview, sans the long wait.
Naturally I was in foodie heaven all day, tasting 13 new Food Trucks, drinking free beer (see how much I like beer at YourNextPint.com), and running around like a psycho ex-girlfriend trying to stalk her old flame – in my case, The Grilled Cheese Truck.
The Grubdown:

Happy Food Truck FEST Friday Biters! This one's the mother of all Food Truck reviews, so make sure you've got your Twitter handy in case you get a monster craving.
With so many food truck stalls inside the Rose Bowl last Saturday, it was definitely hard choosing where to go first – especially since the sign-age was hard to read. But the Starry Kitchen Banana dude wearing a sign that said "Please Enjoy Our Balls in your mouth" seemed like an appropriate start. My hand model-turned-cameraman-for-the-day and I were literally blown away by how crunchy and crispy, yet spicy and creamy the Fried Tofu Ball with Aioli sauce was. (He is nowhere near a vegetarian and hates tofu, so I was surprised to see his satisfaction.)
After Starry Kitchen, our strategy was pretty much "find the shortest line" and Mo-Chica was next. Unfortunately, I could tell why. Despite the beautiful presentation and multiple components, the Peruvian Potato Cake with Amarillo Sauce was soggy and wet with a hint of spice.
Feeling intimidated from the ridiculously long Dogzilla line, we decided to cross the field and hit up Kabob 'N Roll. I absolutely loved the Beef Skewer with Greek spices like cinnamon, frankincense and myrrh (not really the latter two). But, it was one of the most original tasting meats I've had from a Mediterranean truck so far.
Next, the Manila Machine. The Pork Belly and Pineapple Adobo totally wowed us. Succulent Pork Belly, not too fatty with sweet 'n tart Pineapple – thank you sir, I'll have another, and we certainly did. I liked the easy to bite size of the Egg Roll, but the Pork Belly definitely trumped it.
On to Fresh Fries (for big highs) with wacky combinations you could only come up with if you were on something, like Sweet Potato with globs of Creamy Peanut Butter & Chocolate Sauce. It tastes exactly like you would imagine it too – sweet, salty & weird. I wish they used a Dark Chocolate sauce instead of the (probably) Hershey's syrup to cut out the sugaryness. I liked how plump the Regular Fries with Guacamole & Sour Cream was, but I missed the saltiness you get from a tortilla chip.
Now I'm not the biggest Bahn Mi fan because I think Carrots in a sandwich is just plain weird, but Mandoline Grill's Pork was very tender and at least the bread sunk down when you sunk your teeth in.
At this point it was 5pm, DJ Bryan Davidson was blasting some beats, and the General Admission crowd started rolling in. We decided to cross the field again to find an uber short line – low and behold, Antojitos Mi Abuelita was wide open (probably because they were one of the only food stalls to turn there food out mega fast.) I grabbed all 4 tacos, but the best were the "green" ones: Zucchini Squash Blossom that was packed with so much flavor, it was like zucchini to the 10th power, and citrusy, tangy Green Mole. The Mushroom Taco was bland. And the Traditional Mole Taco tasted way too chocolatey – wow, I never thought I would complain about something having TOO much chocolate.
The Chicken Dumplings from the Dim Sum Truck were quite large, meatpacked, and had a sweet 'n tangy sauce. (Note: do not attempt to eat these cold, they lose their zing.)
Both my hand model/cameraman and I fell in love with Rosa's Bella Cucina's Arancini Fried Risotto Balls with Meat Sauce – however, the Peas made it feel like Shepherds Pie sans potato. And the grubworthy, powdered sugary Zeppole Italian donut had the cutest mini Nutella pack you ever did see.
While I did not get to try the Best of Show Taco from Mariscos Jalisco – and announced by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa himself – I quite enjoyed the simple, fresh flavors of Mariscos El Teto's Shrimp Taco with Salsa Fresca & Mexican Crema.
At this point, our hunger was winding down and I had to save room for the yet-to-show Grilled Cheese Truck. But with a name like "Death Sauce" I just had to try The Flying Pig Truck's Kimchee Taco. I love kimchee and I like spicy – not to the point of dripping sweat beads from my forehead. Unfortunately, the Sauce was nowhere near Hell, not even Purgatory. At least the Crunchy Peanuts kept it interesting.
Since the Munchie Machine was right next door, I snatched up a Vegetini Pesto Sandwich with none of the Red Onions, Roasted Peppers & Zucchini they described it to have. With a name like "Munchie" I felt taken for a fool – perhaps they meant their food will still LEAVE YOU with the MUNCHIES?
In search of the Grilled Cheese Truck, we went outside to discover the mini Unique LA Marketplace, some refreshing Passion fruit and Papaya Naja Whole Leaf Teas, and the Ice Cream Social. Since I'd previously reviewed the Coolhaus Truck and was in the mood for something small 'n sweet, we headed to King Kone. Their nostalgic Chocolate Dipped Kones had a thick chocolate coating that was very tasty, and unless you ate it carefully, it exploded all over you. And the Campfire Milkshake tasted exactly like a Frozen S'more mixed with Cookies 'N Cream Ice Cream.
We went back inside the Rose Bowl, just in time for the live concert with The Deadly Syndrome and Warpaint, and ran smack into the line for The Grilled Cheese Truck! FINALLY, THE WAIT WAS OVER! The last time I'd had The Grilled Cheese Truck was a good 4 months ago, so you can imagine the drool running down my face while I was waiting in line. Sadly, they did not have my FAVORITE Tator Tots, but I did grab all 3 Sandwiches, and then some (the lady holding the tray started getting angry with me and told me to limit myself, ha!) The Cheesy Mac & Rib was just as cheesy, salty 'n sweet as I remembered with INSANE Mac & Cheese stuffed right in. The Original didn't shy away from extra slices of cheese, and the Heirloom, while fresh and herby, could've used a little more seasoning.
After 13 Food Trucks and a reunion with my old flame (The Grilled Cheese Truck) my meal ticket had been complete.
Upon exiting the Bowl, to the conveniently easy parking in Lot F, I just HAD to take a pic from the Oh Snap Studios Truck. If you look closely in the photo, you'll see "YourNextBite.com" in the caption bubble, me taking a "bite" of plastic pizza, and of course my trusty hand model celebrating his finished cameraman duties for the day by holding a GIANT CUPCAKE – face & body not included ;)

Komodo Food Truck chef & Le Cordon Bleu alum, Erwin Tjahyadi, uses a unique and unlikely blend of ingredients to create French & Asian fusion Tacos, Fries, and Meatballs. While the flavors may leave you feeling like, "What just happened in my mouth?" you can taste the love that went into preparing the high quality fish & steak that are cooked to perfection.
- fresh, sweet watery, left me wanting more Fish 'n Grapes Taco with Deep-fried Alaskan Cod & Fresh Grape Salad ($3)
- perfect cut, can't put 'em down, salty, cheesy Truffle Fries with Italian Truffle Oil & Parmesan Cheese ($5)
The hand model & I finally made it to the Miracle Mile Art Walk this past weekend where we stumbled upon the Komodo Truck. I'd been waiting to try them for what seemed like ages, so I was pleasantly delighted about this happenchance.
I started with the popular & highly recommended Komodo 2.0 Taco. First off let me tell you that these tacos are rather small in size, but uberly packed to the brim. So be prepared with tons of napkins and carefully plan your angle of attack as the food will most likely explode in epic proportions. The thin strips of Skirt Steak are ever so juicy and tender with Cilantro spice and everything nice. I definitely wish there was more steak to enjoy, since the massive, overpowering Corn Salad with Tomatoes & Pickled Radish sent me on Skirt Steak & Jalapeno Aioli treasure hunt.
On to the Fish 'n Grapes Taco. First of all that just sounds wack. But if you're a fried fish lover and are having a serious craving, you'll stop at nothing to feed it. The Deep-fried Alaskan Cod is definitely cooked to perfection – moist and flaky on the inside, light and fluffy on the outside without too much "fry." The Grape Salad is kind of like a cole slaw – a little creamy, a little sweet, and a little watery from all the juices flowing. The Grapes are plump and HUGE – probably the biggest I've ever had – and are sliced lengthwise in quarters. All in all, the experience is fresh catch wack-a-licious.
The Truffle Fries are seriously addictive – Parmesan Cheese, thick Salt Crystals, drizzled with White Truffle Oil, then cut into perfect hand-grabbing, mouth-crunching width. One might be tempted to eat the whole side alone, especially since Komodo's tacos are rather small in size, but still packed with high quality ingredients (hence the $3, not $2, price.)
Even though their tagline reads "Subsidized Good Food For The People," it's still hard to believe the abundance of tender, can't-put-it-down Korean BBQ Pyongyang Express Food Truck serves for just $5.
I know, I know it's brutally hot in LA and the last thing you're
probably thinking of eating is a hot bowl of steaming rice and meat. But
if you're low on the dough, get on Twitter and find @PyongyangBBQ 'cuz the Rice
Bowl's Slaw will cool you down, the Korean Fruit Drink will refresh your
tastebuds, and the portions will fill you + 1 up.
The Grubdown:
- amazingly tender, not fatty at all, teriyaki flavor DPRK Specially Marinated Chicken & Cole Slaw Rice Bowl ($2)
- slightly carbonated, real fruit flavor, gummy chunks of real Peach Sammi with Sac Korean Drink ($1)
Since it was super hot yesterday, I was really jonesin' for some salad, but figured Cole Slaw was the next best thing. Add Korean BBQ Chicken + Rice in a Bowl for just $2 – SOLD! After sampling a ton of Korean trucks lately – I mean really, I think there are more than taco trucks now – I've been a little skeptical about the quality of the meat, but Pyongyang did not disappoint! Each bite of chicken is super tender – definitely no fat or chewy cartilage here – and it has a great Teriyaki flavor without being sweet. The rice is equally charming – buttery, moist, fluffy, and hard to put the fork down. The Cole Slaw has big chunks of Red & White Cabbage with a faint Sweet Vinegar Sauce.
Oh how I love me some Kimchee! The size of Pyongyang's Quesadilla beats out any Korean one I've had so far, especially since it's stuffed with meat. The Kimchee Cabbage is spicy, vinegary, and loaded on top, so you better eat it fast to avoid the sog effect. Inside is more tender chunks of Teriyaki Chicken and lots of Monterey Jack Cheese.
I'd never heard of Sac before, so when I decided on the Sammi Peach Korean drink I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into. I was pleasantly surprised by the bubbly carbonation and refreshing natural Peach juices. The Sac is basically the Fruity Peach Bits (see close up picture) inside without any of the real fruit pulp, so the texture is a little gummy. It kind of reminded me of those mini canned peaches I used to eat after elementary school.
All in all, my hand model & I were equally impressed by the quality, flavor, and quantity of Pyongyang Express. At one point, I had to tell my mouth to stop eating 'cuz my tummy was super full, but it was oh so good, and he had a hard time finishing his portion, too.
So get in on the deal while it lasts!
Today for lunch, Pyongyang Express will be in front of the CNN building at Sunset & Cahuenga 'til 1:30pm.
From Thailand to Italian, the Yalla Truck mixes up traditional Falafel Pita Sandwiches with 100% vegetarian ingredients from around the world.
The Grubdown:
- bang for your buck, pickled explosion in your mouth, super moist The Yalla Classic Vegan Pita with Red Cabbage Salad, Tomato Cucumber Salad, Onion Salad, Lettuce, Pickled Turnips & Sesame Garlic Lemon Sauce ($4)
- strong tahini flavor with a touch of lemon Hummus ($2)
- smokey, creamy Baba Ghanoush ($2.50)
After celebrating the 4th by eating a weekend's worth of every kind of meat imaginable – Burgers, Hot dogs, Carne asada, Carnitas, BBQ Chicken & Pork – I was really excited to see the relatively new
Yalla Truck rollin' on the Miracle Mile.
The thick Pickled Turnips in The Yalla will make you "Holla!" with a pungent vinegary tang that wakes up your tastebuds. The Falafel – Fried Balls of roasted ground Garbanzo Beans, a.k.a. chickpeas (HINT – unless your man is culinary-educated, never send him to the grocery store for chickpeas because he'll embarrass himself by asking around for CHICKENpeas), veggies & spices – are pleasantly juicy on the inside and crunchy on the outside with a definitive Lemon Parsley flavor. And the trio of Red Cabbage, Tomato Cucumber & Onion Salads pack a serious crunch. I split this with my hand model, but it's definitely big enough to satisfy one person, and seriously a great deal for just $4.
We also HAD to order the Hummus & Baba Ghanoush sides that come right from the fridge in the front of the truck. The Hummus is really good with a strong Tahini flavor. It's thick, not watery, just how I like it. I also really enjoyed the little Chunks of Chickpeas – remember, NOT Chickenpeas – I found hidden inside.
The Baba Ghanoush is also good 'n smokey with big chunks of Roasted Eggplant for you to schlop up with the complimentary Wheat Pita.
If you want to go global, try the Reo Reo Thai Falafel ($5) with Carrots, Bean Sprouts & Sweet 'n Spicy Sesame Peanut Sauce; the Andale Southwestern Falafel ($5) with Black Beans, Corn, Black Olives & Chipotle Sauce; or the Fretta Italian Falafel ($4.50) with Pepperoncini, Black Olives & Italian Dressing. If not, stick to the Yalla or the Greek Falafel ($4.50) with Tomato Cucumber Salad & Tzatziki.
So do your body a favor with some post 4th of July BBQ cleansing and get global Vegetarian & Vegan Pitas from the Yalla.
Today, they'll be in Silverlake on Sunset & Lucile from 12-3:30pm. Tonight they'll be in Santa Monica on Main St. from 5-9pm.
This ain't your mama's ice cream truck. Ever had Wasabi, Balsamic Fig & Mascarpone, or Foie Gras ice cream? Well the self-proclaimed "architecturally-inspired" ice cream sandwich truck, Coolhaus, serves them all & serves them so BIG, you might wanna leave the designer shoes at home.
The Grubdown:
- cakey flavor, but not as rich as Red Velvet Ice Cream Snickerdoodle Sandwich $4
- salty 'n sweet, craving-cure-all Brown Butter Bacon Ice Cream Chocolate Chip Cookie Sandwich $4
I couldn't wait to try their crazy flavors, and had had a craving for Red Velvet in dairy form ever since Yogurtland was sold out of it. So I decided to order the Red Velvet ice cream with Snickerdoodle Cookie. You can definitely taste that buttery, floury cake flavor in the ice cream. As for the Red Velvety Chocolate Bourbon richness, the flavor depth just wasn't there. The Snickerdoodle cookie was really thick and delish though – crisp crunch on the outside and soft 'n chewy on the inside.
I went halfsies with my hand model and also had the Brown Butter Bacon ice cream on the Chocolate Chip cookie, as recommended by the server. When I tried the ice cream by itself, the Bacon chunks were really big and smokey and almost too much. Neither of us – who loooove bacon btw – would want to order a cup of it on it's own, but when we tried it in the sandwich, it was like Rainbows & Unicorns. First of all, the Chocolate Chip cookie – which we would totally order on it's own 'cuz it's perfect in every way – has huge Chocolate Chips and is chewy in all the right places without being too buttery. Combined with salty chunky bacon, which turn into subtle smokey hints amongst the Brown Butter ice cream, it makes for one magical experience.
Now I know $4 is a LOT for an ice cream sandwich, but these things are seriously MASSIVE. I could barely finish both my halves, since the cookies are quite thick, and the amount of ice cream they give you is seriously laughable – not to mention trying to eat it. We were walking and eating at the same time, which I don't recommend – unless you're into decorating your shoes splatter paint style. 'Cuz once you bite down on this enormous structure, it pretty much turns into Chinua Achebe's novel, Things Fall Apart.
Follow @COOLHAUS to check out new seasonal flavors, like Spicy Mexican Chocolate ice cream
and Rice Krispie Treat cookies – they'll not only cool you down this summer, but also fill you up.
Now that summer's officially here, there's no need to sweat fitting in your itsy bitsy bikini because The Green Truck serves up healthy organic food, grass-fed meats, whole grains, and vegan too.
The Grubdown:
- zesty, fresh 'n tangy, tummy & body lovin' Chicken Burrito with Quinoa, Black Beans, Sharp Cheddar, Pico de Gallo & a touch of Sour Cream all in a Spinach Tortilla ($8)
I've been trying to track down the Green Truck FOREVER! Seems like ever since Coachella they've been catering a lot of private events, or just not makin' their way out to the Miracle Mile. So when I spotted them after a much-needed yoga class from the best instructor ever, Erin Kirk, I felt like the planets had finally aligned for me.
After chatting up the menu with the server, my ears perked up as soon as I heard that quinoa was in their Chicken Burrito. If you haven't heard of this ancient Aztec whole grain – the only one being a complete protein packed with all the essential amino acids our body can't produce on their own – then you're seriously WAY out of the loop because it's been blowin' up all over magazines & TV this past year. It looks like a cuter version of cous cous, complete with fashionable belt – see the spiral ring around the grain in picture – and tastes nuttier, too.
Let's get back to the Burrito. It wasn't too big or small in size, but just right. I actually ate the whole healthy thing to myself – ok my hand model had to steal a couple big bites. The Spinach Tortilla is moist and grubworthy. The Chicken is grilled, tender, and seasoned with Mexican spices. The Black Beans are wholesome. The Pico de Gallo is light and fresh. The Cheddar is sharp to pack in some punch! And the Quinoa – a healthier rice substitute – really pops in your mouth. I will definitely be returning for this!
The Green Truck also serves Vegan Burgers ($8), Grass-fed Beef Hot Dogs ($5), Grass-Feed Niman Ranch Burgers ($9), Falafel Wraps ($8), Garlic Rosemary Fries ($3), Homemade Lemonade ($3), and more. They also have compostable forks & knives (the same kind as Whole Foods.)
