As 2015 comes to an end, it's time to reflect on the Top 10 Best Bites of the year.

There were a lot of new openings in Orange County – mainly franchises – such as Sushi Roku, Pizza Nova, Hopdoddy Burger Bar, Krave Kobe Burger Grill, Slapfish, Mendocino Farms, El Cholo, Sweet Lady Jane Bakery, and more.

Some were great, and others mediocre, but this list isn't just about them.

Having opened this year or not, here are the best dishes from my favorite LA & OC dining experiences in 2015. (Listed in no particular order, other than the yummiest ones coming to mind.)

The Grubdown:

Mercado - My new favorite Mexican restaurant, kicking Loteria Grill out of the top spot for years. Order any one of their Tacos and you'll be pleased. And don't skip out on the Choriqueso Dip.

- perfectly chopped chunks of fruity 'n spicy meat with cream to cool it down, Dos Gringas Tacos with Spit-Roasted Pastor, Oaxaca Cheese, Onions, Cilantro, Yxta Salsa Brava, Avocado Salsa & Flour Tortillas $9

Boathouse Collective - It's the best farm-to-table, fulfilling Happy Hour in town.

- so many flavors from sweet apple cinnamon to dirty Cajun peanut, Chicken & Waffles with Apple Cinnamon Compote, spicy Cajun Peanut Sauce, Pickled Cucumber & Onion $8

Blue Ribbon Sushi Bar & Grill - This one wins for the best spin on one of my favorite Japanese dishes, Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice.

- truly beautiful and innovative flavor combo, Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice with Avocado, Eel Sauce & Truffle Oil $22

Sidecar Doughnuts - I think I came here every other month to try each new seasonal "Raised Doughnut" flavor. You should too.

- whipped fluffy insanely deliciousness that's even better than pumpkin pie, Pumpkin Fool Raised Doughnut with House Made Pumpkin & Mascarpone Mousse, Whipped Sour Cream & Gingersnap Crumble $3.75

Patty Macs - This humble, neighborly spot wins for best variety of 10+ gourmet Mac 'N Cheeses. There Burger is outstanding, too.

- this baby's got plenty of kick, sweet nutmeg & clove meets hot pepper spice, Jerk Chicken Mac with Marinated Chicken in Jamaican Jerk Sauce & Three Cheese Blend $10.95

The Dock - I can't believe it's taken me so long to get here. The food and bay views are spectacular. #DateNight

- everything you ever wanted, hearty, cheesy 'n creamy, Red Wine Braised Short Ribs with Potato Gratin, Swiss Chard, Petite Carrots & Mushroom Coulis $38

Ramos House Cafe - While this place has history, their menu keeps up with the Joneses. Try to sneak away on a weekday when there are fewer crowds.

- it's everything, hearty 'n filling, smokey, buttery 'n slightly sweet, Smoked Bacon Scramble with Wilted Rocket & Apple Fried Potatoes $16

Pueblo - This modern Spanish Tapas spot, reminding me of LA's former Cobras & Matadors, is here to stay in The OC.

- creamy, salty, fatty 'n everything else your heart desires, Mar y Montana Seared Pork Belly, Sea Scallops & Cauliflower Crema $14

Shuck Oyster Bar - Another winner from The Mix at SOCO with simple 'n clean flavors.

- beautiful texture, lots of seafood, sweet chunky tomato 'n tangy cheese, Seafood Stew with Mahi Mahi, Mussels, Clams, Shrimp, Parmesan, Parsley & Toasted French Bread Slices $14

Pizza Nova - You just can't beat friendly service, a fun 'n casual atmosphere, water views, and a modern twist on classic Pepperoni.

- spicy 'n creamy with super fluffy dough, Pepperoni White Woodfired Pizza with Fresh Garlic, Alfredo Sauce, Mozzarella, Fontina, Ricotta & Parmesan

Sushi Roku Opens at Fashion Island in Newport Beach

This past Monday, Sushi Roku officially opened at Fashion Island in Newport Beach. It's their sixth location since 1997 with restaurants from Cali to Vegas and Scottsdale. Sushi Roku is known for bringing refined Japanese hot & cold cuisine to the table, in a contemporary atmosphere. And finally, Fashion Island has an upscale sushi spot to match it's LA transplants, like Red O and Fig & Olive.

I first visited the A-List celebrity $ee-and-be-$cene spot at their West Hollywood location in LA a few years back. Here's a list of what I enjoyed that's available to eat in Newport Beach.

The Grubdown:

- worth every YENny, must-order, thinly sliced, light yet rich with a touch of acid, Salmon Sashimi Carpaccio with Black Truffles Shaved Tableside $18

- a lot harder, thicker, crunchier & more expensive than my favorite Izakaya Katsuya's version, "Hanabi" Spicy Tuna on Crispy Rice with Diced Green Onions (these were an extra-specially appreciated nice touch, though) $15

- oozy sweet caramel mush, yet so delectable, Miso Eggplant Dengaku $9

- a roku classic, creamy aioli, and hard to wrap your mouth around, Signature Baked Lobster Roll with Creamy Miso Sauce $20

- pretty standard, spicy 'n sticky, Spicy Tuna Cut Roll $9.50

While the atmosphere is nice, some of Sushi Roku's sky-high prices just don't compare to other favorites like 930 Sushi in OC and Izaka-Ya by Katsu-Ya in LA.

The Grubdown:

- enjoy bottomless brunch and $5 margi's all night with Japanese & Latin fusion cuisine on the rooftop at Zengo Santa Monica

- take in some American barbecue, my favorite view of "The Hills", and maybe a glimpse from the Bowl's annual fireworks display at The Roof on Wilshire

- the menu's since changed with a much needed upgrade, but The Deck on Laguna Beach has quite possibly the best unobstructed views of the Pacific and local fireworks

Connie And Ted's - Authentic Rhode Island seafood from the state-named Chowda to Stuffies

- finally a REAL Rhode Island SPLIT toasted bun Lobster Roll with a ridiculous bounty of Buttery Lobster Chunks that were so tender, they fell apart in my mouth $20

Laurel Hardware - The epitome of the LA scene from celeb sightings to creamy Kale Salads

- if you eat plain kale salad daily you'll enjoy this over-dressed, heavier, creamier, indulgent version, Lollipop Sprouts with Avocado, Pepitas & House Made "Ranch" $12

Mister Parker's, Palm Springs - This kitschy restaurant inside The Parker Hotel knows how to dish up meat

- i've never had lamb so tender, my fork accidentally hit it and the meat fell off the bone, Flinstone size Carre d'Agneau Lamb Shank with Lentils de Puy, Bloomsdale Spinach, and Pomelo Emulsion $38

Carmelita's Kitchen - Finally, some authentic Mexican spice and sauces in OC

Hostaria del Piccolo - From inventive Black Squid Ink Pizza Dough to simple Housemade Tomato Pasta

SeaLegs Wine Bar - Ironically, their meat is tastier than their seafood

After reviewing the best bites from the best restaurants I dined at in 2013, I'm strangely surprised by the meat to seafood ratio (especially since fish is always my first choice.) Just goes to show how high I set the bar when bringing you biters only the finest.

930 Sushi serves my favorite stuff on sale

Try saying that three times fast. It's hard to believe it's been a whole year since I've moved down from LA to OC – and it didn't take me long to find my favorite sushi spot. (Ironically, it's like pulling teeth trying to scout out the best authentic Mexican restaurant.) But, 930 Sushi on PCH in Newport Beach definitely takes the (Adzuki Bean) Cake.

Not only do they serve the most satisfying Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice (there's an amazing Albacore version, too) AND the best blended Seaweed Salad (without all those scary tentacle and branch-like bits), but they also sell them for 50% off on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5-7pm.

Another added bonus is the fact that their chefs are always welcoming, and they have a full bar.

The Grubdown:

Orange County Restaurant Week has arrived

Just a few weeks ago, I was enjoying Newport Beach Restaurant Week. Who'd a thought the time has come to open wide for all of OC's dining scene with Orange County Restaurant Week.

The five-year-old foodie event kicked off February 24th. Not to worry, you still have until this Saturday, Mar 2nd to gobble up what's left of the reservations.

Here's a list of restaurants – from Asian to African – I've visited with dishes that are part of the prix-fixe deal. (3-course Lunches range from $10 to $20 with Dinners from $20 to $40.)

The Grubdown:

Anqi

- super plump, juicy, great charcoal flavor, large 'n in charge, Grilled Quinzoa White Prawns over Saffron Fried Rice & Piquillo Pepper Fume

Capital Grille

- like french onion soup in a bowl without the carbs, tangy 'n tamarind flavors, Bone-in Kona Coffee Crusted Dry Aged Sirloin with Shallot Butter

Mozambique

- sweet, citrusy 'n spicy, thanks goodness for the cooling salsa, Wood Fired Peri Peri Chicken with Mozambique Rice and Mango Salsa

True Food Kitchen

Bite Advice: Don't choose a restaurant you've never been to before during restaurant week. But if you must, I'd go with one that's been on the block for a while. Things tend to get heated in the kitchen with massively long reservation lists. And it's highly likely that special dish you've been salivating over your keyboard for, could sell out. (Trust me, you'll thank me later.)

With 2 holidays around the bend, I thought I'd chip in with 1 Latin-Asian themed restaurant that serves up Cinco de Mayo fare and Mother's Day Brunch. Zengo at the Santa Monica Place mall is the perfect place to enjoy some late night tapas on the open-air roof patio cuddled up next to the fire, or soak in some in some Sunday rays and smell the ocean breeze.

I was lucky enough to indulge on Mexico City born, French inspired chef Richard Sandoval's menu last November – check out my delectable pics and flavor notes here.

After a 2-month menu, larger bar, and interior design renovation, Sushi Roku in West Hollywood finally re-opened last October. Why it took Your Next Bite so long to review the redo, words cannot say. But I can tell you the must-orders at Roku – whether you choose to sit out on the open-air garden patio, private dining room, or sushi bar. And, that it's still the same typical LA $ee-and-be-$cene with some sky-high prices not worth it compared to the competition.

The Grubdown:

Your Take-Away: Definitely don't miss out on the Salmon Sashimi Carpaccio, Miso Eggplant, and Signature Baked Lobster Roll. Finally, the Champagne Elderflower Cocktail is pretty undeniable too, no matter what round you're on.

Temaki Japanese Hand Roll Truck serves up Fresh Fish to Order

There's no need to hesitate when it comes to ordering Raw Fish from the latest Japanese Sushi on wheels, Temaki Truck.  Despite my Raw Diet Detox, the Temaki Truck was kind enough to accommodate my strict no grain (amongst a laundry list of others things) policy. Instead, they stuffed my Hand Rolls chock full of Cucumber Strips and probably snuck a little extra Sushi inside too.

The Grubdown:

- buttery fresh goodness Yellowtail Toro Sashimi $6 for 7 pieces

- squishy in a good way, sesame seed crunch, velvety "Slammin' Salmon" Spicy Salmon Hand Roll $3

- just as yum as you'd expect with fiery red pepper bits "Chicken of the Sea" Spicy Tuna Hand Roll $3

- vinegary sweet, a teensy bit rubbery, coulda really used the rice to soak up the sauce "Octo-Shrimp" Hand Roll $3

Temaki serves their fish fresh-to-order with prices that are very nice – considering their awesome quality – so don't be surprised if the wait takes a little extra time.

After snapping a pic of my meal, I thought "wow, all this food for $16 just for me – what a deal!"

Naturally, I went head first into the Yellowtail Toro. I'm usually not a huge Yellowtail fan, but make it a Toro cut and I'm good to go. It really is buttery soft 'n smooth with a spec of black pepper & salt (you can see it in the picture if you look real close) for gentle season.

The Spicy Salmon Hand Roll, I could've eaten 20 of. I love the mellow sweetness of the Salmon paired with the Spicy Red Pepper Sauce, then backed by the Sesame Seed crunch. Same goes for the Spicy Tuna, but it tastes more fresh than sweet and is cut in finer bits.

I do not recommend getting the Octo-Shrimp Hand Roll without Rice – not like it comes that way, mine was a special order – but the thick Vinegary almost too Sweet Sauce doesn't go down well  without some Rice to soak it up.

I look forward to coming back soon for the Tokyo Shrimp with Masago Roll & 5-Piece Temaki Maki special, just as the sushi chef intended, with rice.

Brought to you by Bon Appetit & Mexico's Toque d' Oro award-winning chef, Richard Sandoval, his Japanese & Latin cuisines are blended beautifully. And the customizable Lunch $20 Prix Fix Menu isn't fussy at all, but rather serious bang for your delicious dollar.

The Grubdown:

My Lunch Prix Fix Choice:

- more-than-expected, spicy like tuna, crispy fresh Chipotle Yellowfin Tuna Roll with Wasabi Tobiko, Avocado, Cucumber & Sesame-Chipotle Rouille

- inhalable, worth getting forked over & beaten up for Masala-Achiote Roasted Chicken Tandoori with Black Bean Dal, Cilantro & Mango Salsas

- husky 'n grainy breading, kinda chewy, yet plump Yucca Fries with Lemon Togarishi Aioli & Miso Mustard Dipping Sauces

The Handmodel's Lunch Prix Fix Choice:

- oniony, earthy Miso Soup with Tofu, Tomato, Wakame & Truffle Oil

- hot saucey, smokey, crunchy 'n meaty Grilled Salmon with Sauteed Mushrooms, Bacon & Achiote Ponzu

- lemony, buttery, charred Grilled Asparagus with Lemon Peel & a Pat of Butter

Out of all the restaurants opening up in the new Santa Monica mall, Zengo was my first choice. Primarily because it reminded me most of one of my favorite Miami restaurants, Sushi Samba. But with each sip, slurp, and bite from each new dish arriving – they serve "give 'n take" style as soon as it's cooked so it tastes fresh – my eyes and tastebuds continued to be surprised.

The hand-muddled Mango Lemonade definitely set the tone for the meal. You can tell a lot of attention to detail went into the preparation of what's usually a fairly standard drink. This one is so ridiculously yummy you'll forget all about the fact it's sans alcohol.

The Yellowfin Tuna Roll comes with a lot more rolls than expected (8), especially considering Zengo serves "small shared plates." The Green Roe on top is tiny 'n crunchy, and there's a great balance of cream and spice between the Aioli, Avocado, and Wasabi Tobiko.

The Miso Soup is also unexpected with chunky Tomato and Truffle additions.

As for the Indian/Latin Chicken Tandoori, there are so many flavors going on between the Red & Green Dals, Crema on top of Black Beans, and Achiote spices that you literally will be fighting over every last bite. (I kind of regret that I inhaled it so fast, trying to down more than my hand model, because I wanted to savor each little bit of tenderness.)

The Grilled Salmon has a striking Charcoal flavor, almost a little overwhelming. But accompanied by the thick Bacon Bits, super plump 'n meaty Mushrooms, Pickled Carrots, Crunchy Sprouts, and Tobasco-like Sauce it's definitely a hot mouthful.

Like our waitress said, the Yucca Fries are probably something you've never seen before – besides in Taro Chip form. These puppies are thick, rugged, husky, plump, and stacked – so which ever way you swing, they'll float your boat. The two Dipping Sauces are tangy, lemony, and spicy. Swirl 'em together for maximum effect.

And the Grilled Asparagus dish is plentiful and simple with humble Butter, Lemon & Garlic.

Whether you sit in a private dining room inside, out on the heated rooftop patio by the fireplace, or belly up to the muddled bar, your dining experience at Zengo will definitely be one to remember.

Happy Portions at Noir Wine Bar's Happy Hour

Three-month-old Noir Wine Bar marries the best of Asian cuisines – Bulgogi Jap Chae, Poke Tuna, even an off-the-menu Kimchee Sushi Roll – at Happy Hour prices from 3-7pm.

Located on La Brea just south of Wilshire, Noir sits quietly on the block with black & white awnings & black wooden signs. But step inside and a fiery red wall greets you on the left, while a lofty brick wall says hello on the right. The center 8-seater bar is brimming with 49 Wines, 17 Beers, 8 Sakes, and 4 Soju-tinis, which during happy hour are discounted from $2 to 50% off. And the Happy Hour portions are some of the biggest I've seen at an Asian restaurant, priced at 2 for $12.99 and 3 for $18.99.

The Grubdown:

- might as well be a meal, sesame 'n soy, smooth yet crunchy Beef Bulgogi Jap Chae

- the almost bottomless Martini Glass of light 'n chunky, fresh 'n peppery Poke Tuna

- the whole Avocado, the whole Mango, but not the whole citrusy sweet Salmon Salad

I've been wanting to try Noir Bar for quite some time now. When the hand model and I showed up 15 mintues 'til happy hour ended, the bartender/waiter (thankfully) said, "No Sweat" and proceeded to give us a "Grubdown" of the most filling items on the menu. 

We started with the Salmon Salad. The Salmon is fresh, cured in Yuzu Citrus Sauce, and decorated with tiny black & red Flying Fish Roe that pop in your mouth. However, the huge portions of delicate, Sesame Seed-sprinkled Avocado & Mango (probably a whole piece of fruit each) overshadow the Salmon – a.k.a. I wanted more of the fruity fish.

The Poke Tuna, on the other hand, is bursting with bounty and flavor. Served in a heaping Martini Glass, the Tuna is dusted with salty Nori Flakes, kissed with a Red Peppery Bean Paste, tangled up in Seaweed Salad, and swimming in Yuzu Cucumber Sauce. When I got to the bottom, I was tempted to drink up every last delicious drop – you will, too.

The biggest, most wholesome & filling plate of the bunch is the Beef Bulgogi Jap Chae with Cellophane (Glass) Noodles that are stir fried in Sesame Oil & Soy Sauce. The sliced Cabbage & Carrots give it some major crunch. The Beef is spicy & sweet, but a little chewy.

While these 3 dishes were enough to fill us up, I couldn't resist ordering the bartender's favorite Hot Night Roll ($11.50) from the main (not Happy Hour) menu. Of course I spiced things up (pun intended) by customizing it, exchanging the imitation Crab Meat for Kimchee. This special order is not for the weak-at-tongue because it literally lights your mouth on fire. Served with Spicy Tuna on the outside and Tempura Shrimp on the inside, the Kimchee adds more heat, a touch of sweetness, and warmth (temperature-wise.) We let the bartender have a bite and he was impressed. The chef was equally too, so much so that by the time you visit Noir it might already be on the menu.

Noir also serves some Asian-American fusion Desserts, like Green Tea Ice Cream Shakes ($5.50) and Peanut Butter Sandwich Cookies ($6.50).

As for Sake recommendations, order the Okunomatsu Tokubetsu Junmai. As the owner states, "it's a best seller in Japan." The subtle, sweet 'n smooth melon flavor is probably why.

Fishlips Food Truck - Simply Divine Sushi, Complicated Menus

Fishlips Food Truck has been rollin' out sushi on the street for over a year now. While their rolls & Temari (ball-shaped Kyoto-style sushi) are simply divine, their multiple menus are a bit much. My advice – stick to the pictures.

The Grubdown:

- just the right size, Spicy Small Set with 4 fire 'n ice Spicy Tuna Rolls, 3 lemon buttery Salmon Temari, and 2 sweetly charred Unagi Temari ($6.95)

If you've been hesitant about trying fresh fish from a truck, fear no more. You can actually watch the sushi chefs prepare your food right in front of your eyes through the large glass window after you order.

Speaking of eyes, mine were kind of hurting after reading their overwhelming 5+ menus, so I decided to just succumb to the pictures – writer, fail. I chose the Spicy Small Set which is just enough for one person, but you might leave still curious about that yummy sounding Crunchy Hand Roll ($3.50).

The Spicy Tuna Rolls are, as Katy Perry says,"Hot and Cold" with spicy seasoning, fresh 'n cool Cucumber, and creamy Avocado. The toasted Sesame Seeds give it a nice crunch, too.

The thin Lemon Wedges on the Salmon Temari add a surprising zest & bitterness from the rind that'll change your usual sushi salmon order forever, and the fish has a sweet buttery soft texture.

As for the Unagi (Eel), it has a great balance of sweet & char, but the sushi chefs really need to beef up the cut of the filet – a.k.a. I wanted more.

And last but not least, the rice is extremely light 'n fluffy, so be careful 'cuz it falls apart easily.

Overall, the quality of the fish is fantastic, and the value is huge for the small price.

Sushi Kushi Imai in Beverly Hills has superb sashimi and skinny Happy Hour prices

Sushi Kushi Imai, a traditional Edo-style Sushi & Kushi (Japanese BBQ Skewers) spot in the strip mall on Wilshire Blvd. & San Vicente is not to be skipped. Their Beverly Hills zip code backs up their bountiful, A-class Sashimi without the snobby prices, especially at Happy Hour.

The Grubdown:

- silky, big 'n fresh Salmon Sashimi & Cucumber (5 pcs $5.50)

- buttery, creamy Toro Sushi (2 pcs $6.00)

- tangy with a kick Spicy Tuna Cut Roll (6 pcs $3.50)

- subtle, tender Scallop with Artichoke & Vegan Butter ($3)

- lacked seasoning and excitement, Baked Custard Snow Crab with Egg & Fish Broth ($3)

- truly tender, full of flavor Filet Mignon Kushi Skewer with Dipping Sauces ($4.50)

- crisp, citrusy 'n gingery House Organic Salad ($2.40)

- major selling point for me, wholesome, nutty Brown Rice (Side $2, for Sushi $0.50, for Roll $1)

I've been going to Sushi Kushi Imai for about 3 years now – mainly because I love their fresh fish & optional brown rice. Every time I take someone new, they are so impressed by their really, really, ridiculously good Sushi Lunch Specials ($11.80-15.80) & Sashimi Samplers (Shiso Leaf included, $24-38) that's served in this low key-would never even think to visit-strip small spot.

So when I took the hand model for their 5-year Anniversary Special $3 Menu – still going on now! – on top of their regular Happy Hour every day from 5-7:30pm, his jaw plummeted to floor at the mere $30 spent on 8 dishes & 3 beers for 2 people. Needless to say, we'll be coming back for more, and you should too (just don't take my seat at the bar after divulging this secret spot!)

The Salmon Sashimi is very generous, portion wise, and is perhaps the silkiest and freshest we've had. It's served atop sliced Cucumbers as an added bonus.

The Toro Sushi– oh how I love thee – is fatty, buttery and scrumptious.

The Spicy Tuna is delish and definitely adds some fire to your tongue. (Bite Advice: Dip it in the Filet Mignon Kushi's Creamy Mayo Dipping Sauce to tame the flame.)

The Sauteed Scallop, while fresh & tender, looks prettier than it tastes with subtle zing from the Artichoke & Vegan Butter Broth.

Being a quiche freak, the Baked Crab Custard is just lackluster. It really needs a touch of Cream, Cheese, or Spice to keep the flavors from falling flat.

Even the House Organic Salad has more going on with a zesty Citrus Ginger Carrot Vinaigrette. And you can't go wrong amping up your fiber intake with a Brown Rice side for $2.

Wash it all down with $1 Sapporo on Draft, friendly service, 3 different seating areas, and Edo-period paintings and you'll forget all about the fact you're in a strip mall (a Beverly Hills one, no less.)

Sushi Kushi Imai is open daily, has a full bar, and is available for catering parties with a traditional Edo-era pushcart Sushi Wagon.

Izakaya by Katsuya is so Once A Month good

If you haven't been to Izaka-Ya by Katsu-Ya yet, run don't walk, because it took all my might to write this review on my best kept, sushi secret that always curbs my cravings and never disappoints. (Doomo arigatoo Master Sushi Chef, Katsuya Uechi!)

Currently there are two locations – one in West Hollywood that packs in the crowds at night, so reservations are recommended – and one in Manhattan Beach that opened the end of January. If they could only grace our presence by coming to the OC, I think my life would be complete. At least they have a new Friday Night Special happy hour menu.

The Grubdown:

- my absolute favorite off-the-menu item, Salmon Four Ways: Raw with Wasabi, Seared with Grilled Onions & Yuzu, Raw with Caviar & Cream, and Seared with Pickled Shiso Leaf

- this is your new french fry, Spicy Tuna on Crispy Rice with Firey Jalapeno Slices ($9.50)

- once you pop you can't stop, buttery, tangy, spicy Creamy Rock Shrimp Tempura ($9)

Whenever friends are visiting in town and wondering where to eat, my first response is, "Check out YourNextBite.com," followed by, "Loteria Grill, Cobras & Matadors, and Izaka-Ya by Katsu-Ya." The first time we went, we fell in love, and have been coming back almost every month ever since.

The West Hollywood location, while usually bustling, has a relaxed, unpretentious vibe compared to its upscale sister restaurant Katsuya. The interior is fisherman tackle box kitsch. The servers, like Robert (in the 3rd picture at the top) couldn't be nicer. And the food is served small plates / tapas style, so it's cheaper than Katsuya, but still has the same quality and even some of the same items – basically you're not missing out.

While I've had almost everything on the menu – Build Your Own Yellowtail Tartar Rolls, Blue Fin Tuna, Toro, Seared Albacore with Grilled Onions, Seared Tuna with Japanese Salsa, Nasu-Miso, Shishito Peppers, Robert Roll, Baked Scallop Crab (BSC) Roll, etc. – no matter what, I ALWAYS ORDER these three items:

1. SALMON 4 WAYS: Not sure why it's off the menu now, but Robert (our favorite waiter) always lets us order it. The Raw is super buttery and fresh with a small dollop of Wasabi to give it a kick. The Seared with Grilled Onions & Yuzu has a nice crunch, a touch of Dijon, and Citrus Zest. The Sushi with Caviar & Cream really is the cream of the crop. And the Seared with Pickled Shiso Leaf is tangy, vinegary, and has a hint of bitterness. I usually split this dish, then end up ordering another because it's just so darn good.

2. SPICY TUNA ON CRISPY RICE: This is like FRENCH FRIES ON CRACK, and I've yet to meet another "DEALER" that makes it so well. The Crispy Rice tastes like a Japanese version of a hash brown that's crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and flavored with Soy Sauce. The Spicy Tuna is fresh, creamy, and melts in your mouth, while the Jalapeno crunch at the end wakes it up.

3. CREAMY ROCK SHRIMP TEMPURA: While these are also served atop a Spicy Tuna Roll in the SSC Roll, I recommend getting it by the bowl, since it's already rich enough. The tangy Creamy Mayo Sauce that's slightly spicy is so good, you'll forget all about the calories you're consuming. The lightly Tempura Battered Shrimp are super soft and tender inside (see pictured). The only thing bad about this dish is waiting for these babies to cool down so you can pop 'em in your mouth.

4-5 plates is enough for 2 people to split. But before you decide to order other dishes, try these first, because I guarantee you'll be fighting over every last bite and end up ordering another round.

To wash it all down, I recommend a large bottle of Asahi ($6) and their House Sake ($9) – it's mellow and slightly sweet.

Also, don't miss their new Friday Night Specials from 5:30-7pm with $8-10 Artisan Craft Beers, 4 for $10 Wine Tastings, $10 Kobe Beef Burgers & Izakaya Tacos, and 3 items for $10, like Sashimi for three, Scallop Carpaccio & Japanese Ceviche.

I betcha can't go just once a month. Doo itashimashite ("You're Welcome" in Japanese.)
